"Scream" 5 and 6 were a huge success for Paramount Pictures
The "Scream" filmmakers are taking action: After Melissa Barrera repeatedly attracted attention due to antisemitic statements on social media, the actress has now been sacked from the franchise.
Barrera was one of the core characters in the new "Scream" movies and was set to star in "Scream 7". However, as Variety reports, the actress has now been fired due to antisemitic remarks regarding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. The production company Spyglass Media stated that they maintain a zero tolerance policy on the matter:
"We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech."
Barrera shared several posts on Instagram in which Israel was accused of genocide and ethnic cleansing against the Palestinians. The Holocaust was also used as a point of comparison in these posts.
How the franchise will now deal with the actress' dismissal remains to be seen. There is, of course, the possibility of recasting the character or dropping her from the series altogether.
