This project has been in the pipeline for quite some time: "Cloverfield 2". Since the release of the first part in 2008, there has always been speculation about a direct sequel to the story. After it was announced a few years ago that a sequel was in development, things went quiet around the project for a long time. Now the director himself has given an update.

On the sidelines of the SXSW Festival, the portal Countdown City Geeks spoke to director Babak Anvari. Although Anvari was unable to give any specific details, he shared his excitment for the project. The most important insight: "Cloverfield 2" is still in development! After the long wait, one could have assumed that the sequel would no longer be made.

So far, there have been three films in the mysterious franchise: "Cloverfield", "10 Cloverfield Lane" and "The Cloverfield Paradox". The series has been characterized by its very loose connection. All three films have a different setting as well as new characters. This could now change with "Cloverfield 2": The movie is set to be a direct sequel to the first installment.

Director Anvari has so far mainly directed smaller thrillers and horror films such as "Under the Shadow" and "I Came By". Next up is his latest project "Hallow Road" with "Gone Girl" star Rosamund Pike. The screenplay for "Cloverfield 2" is written by "The Ritual" author Joe Barton. Barton most recently developed the Netflix series "Black Doves" with "Pirates of the Caribbean" actress Keria Knightly. As in the three previous movies, "Star Wars" director J.J. Abrams is involved as a producer.

It is not yet known when we can expect the "Cloverfield" sequel and which actors are involved in the project. But we will of course keep you up to date.

The Cloverfield Films

The unconventional "Cloverfield" film series is known for its innovative storytelling and mix of horror, science fiction and thriller. Starting in 2008, the series has not only shaken up the monster movie genre, but also created a universe that continues to surprise viewers.

Cloverfield (2008)

The first movie in the series, "Cloverfield", was directed by "The Batman" director Matt Reeves. The film uses the "found footage" format, in which all the action is shown from the perspective of a hand-held camera. This creates a documentary-like, realistic atmosphere and puts the viewer right in the middle of the action.

"Cloverfield" tells the story of a group of friends who are celebrating a farewell party in New York City when a gigantic monster suddenly attacks the city. Amidst the chaos, they try to survive and rescue their friend, who went missing during the attack. The movie places particular emphasis on the subjective perception of the characters and shows the monster's attack only dimly, which lends the movie a certain mysterious tension.

10 Cloverfield Lane (2016)

"10 Cloverfield Lane", the second movie in the series, was directed by Dan Trachtenberg and is an exciting departure from the concept of the first film. While "Cloverfield" focused primarily on the monster itself, "10 Cloverfield Lane" is a psychological thriller that plays with more subtle threats. It is not a direct sequel, but rather has a loose connection within the "Cloverfield" universe.

The movie follows Michelle (Mary Elizabeth Winstead), who wakes up in an underground bunker after a car accident. There, she is taken in by Howard (John Goodman) and Emmett (John Gallagher Jr.), who claim that the surface has become uninhabitable due to a catastrophic attack. But the more Michelle finds out about the situation, the more she is confronted with the question of whether she is safe or being held captive by Howard. The film builds up a steadily increasing tension and plays with the themes of trust and paranoia.

The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)

The third film in the series, "The Cloverfield Paradox", takes a completely different approach and mixes the "Cloverfield" universe with science fiction elements. Directed by Julius Onah, the movie is set in space, where a group of astronauts are working on an experimental device to solve the energy crisis on Earth. But when the experiment goes wrong, the team is confronted with various, often dangerous, anomalies linked to the "Cloverfield" monster universe. However, the connection to the previous films is rather vague and is only hinted at through a series of mysterious events.
