Horror fans can expect a new installment of the "I Know What You Did Last Summer" series in cinemas this year. The entertainment magazine People has now published fresh images of the slasher sequel - including Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.!

Who's in the movie?

The two stars from the original films will slip back into their cult roles for the new movie. Similar to the last "Scream" films, the cast of "I Know What You Did Last Summer" consists of a mix of original actors and young newcomers.

The lead role is played by Chase Sui Wonders, who recently gained experience in the teen horror genre in "Bodies Bodies Bodies". Other roles include "Outer Banks" star Madelyn Cline, "The Wilds" actress Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers and Jonah Hauer-King from Disney's "The Little Mermaid".

What was the original film about?

The original film "I Know What You Did Last Summer" was based on the novel of the same name by Lois Duncan and became one of the defining slasher hits of the late 90s in 1997. It centered on a group of teenagers - played by Hewitt, Prinze Jr, Sarah Michelle Gellar and Ryan Phillippe - who decide to keep their crime a secret after a fatal accident. A year later, they receive an ominous message: "I know what you did last summer." A bloody nightmare begins, in which a masked killer hunts down the friends one by one.

The movie hit a nerve at the time, combining teen drama with classic slasher suspense and became a cult hit. Two sequels followed: "I Still Know What You Did Last Summer" and "I'll Always Know What You Did Last Summer". A series reboot also appeared on Amazon Prime in 2021.

What is already known about the plot of the new film?

The new film will have the same starting point as the original movie: Once again, a group of teenagers are involved in a fatal accident. A year later, when a stranger seeks revenge, the group finds out that there was a similar case years ago. So they ask the survivors of the 1997 massacre for help.

When will the first trailer be released?

The first trailer should not be long in coming. After all, it was already shown at CinemaCon 2025 at the end of March. Several trailers from major film studios were presented there, which are now gradually finding their way to us. The theatrical release is not far off: the slasher series will continue on July 18, 2025. So it's quite possible that the trailer is still waiting for us in April.

Horror revivals of the last few years

The new "I Know What You Did Last Summer" joins a wave of horror film revivals that have celebrated success in recent years. Two major horror titles come to mind in particular: "Scream" and "Halloween"

Scream

The "Scream" series, created by Wes Craven in 1996, returned in 2022 with a fifth installment - simply titled "Scream". This film relied on a mixture of nostalgia and fresh ideas, preserving the classic elements of the series while developing the story further. Original stars Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox and David Arquette returned as Sidney, Gale and Dewey. New roles were taken on by Melissa Barrera, "Wednesday" star Jenna Ortega and "Anora" actress Mikey Madison. The film once again mixed the meta elements of the series with modern expectations of horror films.

"Scream 6" was released in cinemas in 2023 and "Scream 7" will follow on February 27, 2026. This time, Neve Campbell is back on board after a break in part 6. You can find all the information about "Scream 7" in our extensive movie preview!

Halloween

The "Halloween" series experienced a massive revival with the 2018, 2021 and 2022 films. In 2018, Laurie Strode, played by Jamie Lee Curtis, returned to take on the unstoppable Michael Myers one more time. This movie ignored all previous sequels and picks up after the 1978 original. The two parts "Halloween Kills" and "Halloween Ends" followed in 2021 and 2022.
