Gremlins and Goonies: New Movies in Development at Warner
The return of two absolute classics
Two absolute classics from the 80s are getting new movies: According to the portal Deadline, Warner is planning a reunion with "Gremlins" soon - and "The Goonies" are also slated for a return to theaters.
A New Gremlins Movie
The new "Gremlins" film comes from a familiar name: Chris Columbus, the screenwriter of the original "Gremlins", will also be responsible for the new movie. Columbus is a true Hollywood legend and has been involved in numerous cult films. Among other projects, the director shot the first "Home Alone" movies and he also directed the first two "Harry Potter" films. Based on his experience, Chris Columbus could therefore definitely preserve the spirit of the original movie. We are particularly excited to see what the effects will look like in a modern "Gremlins" movie - after all, the series is most famous for its legendary puppets.
A New Goonies Movie
At the moment, less information is available about the new "Goonies" film. According to Deadline, Warner is currently working on a treatment for the new movie. However, it is not yet known at this early stage of development which people are involved in the project and what the plot of the film might be.
The adventure film from the 80s is very popular to this day and has inspired numerous movies and series. It is about a group of children who find a treasure map and set off on an adventure. Most recently, the new Star Wars series "Skeleton Crew" was often referred to as "Goonies in space" - so the influence of the classic is as great as ever.
As a result, time and again there has been speculation about a new "The Goonies" film. So now it seems to become a reality: Will Warner be able to revive the old familiar sense of adventure after all these years? We can't wait to find out!
The Goonies: A Classic and its Influence on the Movie World
"The Goonies", released in 1985 and directed by Richard Donner, is not only a nostalgic adventure film but also a cult classic that influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike. The story, which follows a group of kids on an exciting treasure hunt, is a prime example of '80s adventure cinema, blending humor, friendship, and suspense in a way that was unique at the time. The impact of "The Goonies" is enormous. Numerous films and series that have been released since then carry the DNA of the film and are inspired by its mix of childishness, adventure, and teamwork.
Stranger Things
No modern title embodies the inspiration from "The Goonies" more than "Stranger Things". The Netflix series, set in the 1980s, has captured the hearts of fans worldwide with its mix of mystery, adventure, and supernatural elements, while also paying a clear homage to films like "The Goonies". The main characters – a group of friends fighting against supernatural threats – strongly resemble the gang of kids in "The Goonies", who stand up against adults and dangerous foes. Friendship and teamwork are central themes in both "Stranger Things" and "The Goonies", and the emphasis on the 1980s atmosphere in both productions significantly contributes to the tribute.
Super 8
J.J. Abrams' "Super 8" is another example of a film strongly inspired by "The Goonies". The film revolves around a group of kids who investigate a mysterious incident in a small town during their summer vacation. Much like "The Goonies", friendship and adventure are at the forefront, and the film also evokes a strong nostalgic feeling of childhood and the discovery of secrets. It captures the mix of innocent fun and a simultaneous urge for discovery that made "The Goonies" such a success.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle
The 2017 reboot of "Jumanji", "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle", takes the concept of an exciting treasure hunt in a dangerous jungle, drawing strong parallels to "The Goonies". A group of teenagers is pulled into a mysterious game and must face various challenges, similar to how the Goonies had to confront different obstacles on their treasure hunt. While "Jumanji" leans more towards comedy and action, the dynamic of the group of friends and their adventurous spirit recalls the essence of "The Goonies".
"The Goonies" remains a prime example of the children's adventure genre and has inspired numerous films and series in the years following its release. From teamwork to treasure hunts, the themes and elements of the film are timeless and are found in many modern productions. Whether in the supernatural dangers of "Stranger Things", the treasure hunt in "Jumanji", or the adventure story in "Super 8", the ideas of "The Goonies" continue to live on in modern pop culture, showing that the spirit of adventure remains a fascinating and universal theme for both young and older audiences.
