The Odyssey: Christopher Nolan's best box office debut of all time
With impressive numbers, the film starring Matt Damon even surpasses The Dark Knight Rises
Record for "The Odyssey": No other Christopher Nolan film has had such a successful opening at the global box office to date. The box office total after the opening weekend stands at $264.1 million. Of that amount, $124.5 million came from the North American market. An additional $139.6 million came from the rest of the world. The epic has debuted in 73 international markets so far, though some important markets such as South Korea, China, and Japan have not yet been included, as reported by Variety.
As a result, "The Odyssey" has surpassed the global debut of "The Dark Knight Rises": The superhero film, which concluded Nolan's Batman trilogy, opened in 2012 with $249 million – though it should be noted that these ticket sales figures have not been adjusted for inflation. As for the current theatrical year, "The Odyssey" marks the third-best opening of 2026 so far, behind the two animated hits "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" (372.5 million) and "Toy Story 5" (312 million).
Given this success, executives at Universal Pictures are likely pleased as well. Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, president of distribution for Universal Pictures International, is quoted by Variety as saying:
"With 'The Odyssey,' we had the extraordinary opportunity to unite moviegoers worldwide around a story that has resonated across cultures for centuries. Christopher Nolan's passion, vision and unique cinematic voice consistently drive anticipation and attendance on a truly global scale. [...] 'The Odyssey' is that rare kind of movie that brings audiences together across every market in a shared cultural moment."
A resounding success – not just at the box office
"The Odyssey" is based on Homer's epic poem, which is approximately 3,000 years old. Christopher Nolan not only directed the film but also wrote the screenplay. Together with Emma Thomas, he also served as a producer. The film's cast features a number of highly acclaimed actors. Alongside Matt Damon as the protagonist Odysseus, the ensemble includes the following stars: Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong'o, Samantha Morton, John Leguizamo, Zendaya, Charlize Theron, Jon Bernthal, Himesh Patel, Bill Irwin, Elliot Page, and Benny Safdie.
In addition to its strong opening at the global box office, Nolan has once again achieved critical acclaim with his new film. Nolan regularly wins over critics with his work and even swept the Oscars with the biopic "Oppenheimer" – among other honors, Nolan took home the awards for Best Picture and Best Director. "The Odyssey" is also receiving rave reviews and is likely to be in the running for a nomination or two at the upcoming Oscars. When will Christopher Nolan's next movie hit theaters?
At first glance, it might seem a little too early to ask this question – after all, "The Odyssey" has just been released. But the director has already commented on how long we'll have to wait for his next big-screen project. Speaking to Today, Nolan made it clear that it will take at least three years for his next film to be released. He also hinted at just how challenging the production of "The Odyssey" had been:
"I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody's stamina, I think. I mean, it's 'The Odyssey,' of course it should be difficult. We're not doing the job right making a film of 'The Odyssey' if it doesn't seem difficult."
In that sense, he has certainly earned this break. And fans of Christopher Nolan can surely live with having to wait a little longer for his next film – as long as the director remains committed to offering his audience the most incomparable cinematic experience possible.
