John Wick Spin-off: Update on Donnie Yen's Caine Film
The first details about the plot are already known
A new "John Wick" spin-off is on the way! Before "John Wick 5", we can expect a movie about Donnie Yen's character Caine. The project focusing on the fan-favorite from the fourth installment of the action saga has been in development for quite some time. Now, production is about to take a major step forward.
Shooting starts for the Caine spin-off
As the industry magazine Deadline reports, the start of production is imminent. According to the report, filming is set to begin in April 2026. Donnie Yen will not only play the lead role, but will also direct the movie. The spin-off is set to take place after the events of "John Wick: Chapter 4". The assassin has been freed from his obligations to the High Table – but his past is catching up with him.
A score to settle...
Another character from "John Wick 4" will return: Rina Sawayama as Akira. Spoilers for "John Wick 4": The daughter of the Japanese hotel manager Shimazu blames the blind killer Caine for her father's death. This conflict is now likely to be continued in the spin-off film. The post-credit scene from part 4 already made it clear that the two still have unfinished business. There we saw that Akira had tracked down Caine.
The Caine film was presented at CinemaCon 2025 together with "John Wick 5" and an animated prequel. "The Batman" screenwriter Mattson Tomlin will write the script. Keanu Reeves and "John Wick" director Chad Stahelski are on board as producers. There is still no start date for the spin-off. However, with filming due to start in April 2026, we can hope for a release in 2027.
Of course, fans are also particularly excited about the sequel to the main series. Keanu Reeves will return in "John Wick 5". Find out all the details known so far about the upcoming film in the action saga in our compact movie preview!

Donnie Yen's character Caine
With Caine, a fan favorite from "John Wick 4" now takes center stage. Donnie Yen embodied the blind hitman as a deadly and tragic character who is characterized above all by his inner conflict. Caine is a character who is repeatedly forced to return to the world of violence out of love for his daughter. This component is likely to continue to play a central role in the spin-off. The fact that Yen is working both in front of and behind the camera fits perfectly: the martial arts star brings decades of experience from Hong Kong cinema and is known for precise action choreography.
The success of the John Wick saga
Since the first film, the "John Wick" series has developed into a modern action phenomenon. What began as a comparatively small revenge thriller developed into an ever larger, stylized universe with each sequel. In particular, the introduction of the High Table, a global network of contract killers with their own rules and codes, lent the series an almost mythical level. The sequels "John Wick: Chapter 2" and "John Wick: Chapter 3" consistently expanded this world.
The unmistakable action is a key success factor. Director Chad Stahelski relies on long takes, clear choreography and as few cuts as possible. Instead of hectic editing, the focus here is on the physical performance of the actors – especially Keanu Reeves, who performs many of his stunts himself. This authenticity ensures that the fights feel tangible and intense. In the opinion of many fans, "John Wick 4" in particular took the action staging to a whole new level.
Added to this is the visual style: neon-soaked backdrops, iconic locations such as the Continental Hotel and an almost operatic staging of violence give the series its very own aesthetic. At the same time, despite all the exaggeration, "John Wick" manages to set emotional anchor points – be it Wick's grief for his deceased wife or Caine's motivation to protect his daughter.
It is precisely this mixture of stylized action, clear character motifs and a constantly growing world that makes the series so fascinating. The Caine spin-off now has the chance to open up a new perspective on this universe – and to further deepen a character who is already one of the highlights of the saga.
