Home Alone: Rumors of a new sequel starring Macaulay Culkin
The actor already has an idea for the story
Will there be a new "Home Alone" film? Rumor has it that Disney is interested in having Macaulay Culkin star in another sequel to the beloved comedy classic. On his podcast "The Town," Matthew Belloni mentions a meeting between Disney and the former child star:
"I got a tip the other day that there was a very interesting sighting on the Disney lot. Macaulay Culkin was there and he's talked about having an idea for a new Home Alone. And Disney is salivating."

We'll have to wait and see how much truth there is to the speculation. However, Culkin seems to have been open to a sequel for quite some time. As early as last November, he commented on a potential comeback in the role of Kevin McCallister. During the "A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin" tour, he explained that he wouldn't be entirely opposed to it. What's more, Culkin revealed that he already has an idea for a sequel. The movie would be about how Kevin McCallister – now an adult – struggles with his life as a father:
"I'm either a widower or a divorcee. I'm raising a kid and all that stuff. I'm working really hard and I'm not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out. [My son] won't let me in… and he's the one setting traps for me."
As Culkin went on to explain, "the house is some sort of metaphor for our relationship". In other words: Kevin must not only reclaim his house, but also his son's heart. It's not yet clear whether Disney is interested in bringing Culkin's idea to life or has other plans instead. In any case, the star's approach is an interesting twist on the original film. In the 1990 comedy, it was Kevin McCallister who kept others from entering his house. When the family sets off on their Christmas vacation, the little boy is accidentally left behind at home. Soon after, two burglars try to break into the house. But they didn't count on Kevin, who makes life quite difficult for them.
Home Alone: A classic of the '90s
The original film is a classic that made Culkin one of the most popular Hollywood child stars of the 1990s and remains extremely popular today, especially during the Christmas season. Alongside Culkin, the cast included Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern, John Heard, and Catherine O'Hara. It was directed by Chris Columbus, who later went on to direct the first two "Harry Potter" films, among others. When "Home Alone" hit theaters 36 years ago, the comedy became a massive hit. With a budget of just 18 million U.S. dollars, the film grossed a staggering 477 million at the global box office.
The sequel, "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York", followed in 1992, with lead actor Macaulay Culkin and director Chris Columbus back on board. The sequel wasn't quite as successful, but with box office receipts of $358 million, it still managed to rake in a considerable sum. Will Macaulay Culkin's return to the role of Kevin be just as successful? We'll see.
