Grandgear: New Film by the Director of Godzilla Minus One in the Works
A start date has also been set
After director Takashi Yamazaki made a name for himself internationally with "Godzilla Minus One", his first Hollywood production is now in the works. As reported by Deadline magazine, the filmmaker will helm the sci-fi project "Grandgear".
Nothing is known about the blockbuster's plot yet. However, the first scenes were shown at this year's Comic-Con earlier this year, which, according to Empire, featured a mech battle. In terms of style, these scenes were reportedly very reminiscent of Guillermo del Toro's "Pacific Rim". As things stand, filming for "Grandgear" is set to begin sometime in 2027. The theatrical release is scheduled for January 14, 2028.
At least there is concrete information regarding the cast. Sam Nivola and "How to Train Your Dragon" actress Nico Parker are set to take on the two lead roles. Paul Giamatti could also join the cast. The Oscar-nominated actor is currently in talks for another role.
"Grandgear", however, isn't the only major project Yamazaki currently has in the works. According to Deadline, 20th Century has secured the rights to his epic "Nue", which will be produced by legendary director Ridley Scott. Not much else is known about the film at this time, though. Both the plot and potential cast members have been kept under wraps so far.
Yamazaki's career continues to gain momentum
Takashi Yamazaki has long been one of Japan's best-known filmmakers and is particularly renowned for his work in visual effects. He celebrated his greatest international success to date with "Godzilla Minus One". Yamazaki took on several roles for the film: in addition to directing and writing the screenplay, he was also largely responsible for the visual effects.
This work ultimately even earned him an Oscar. Particularly noteworthy: Yamazaki was the first director since Stanley Kubrick to personally receive an Academy Award in this category. But Yamazaki is far from done with Godzilla. Its sequel, "Godzilla Minus Zero", recently premiered at the New York Film Festival and is set to open in German theaters on November 6, 2026. Early reviews promise a spectacular spectacle that's every bit as good as the first film.
