Release Date Announced for 24 Jump Street Starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill
"Treasure Island" and "Helldivers" will also get new theatrical releases
The release date for "24 Jump Street" has been set! As Variety magazine exclusively reported, the sequel starring Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill is set to hit theaters on December 10, 2027. It was revealed back in June that Sony is working on "24 Jump Street" and that the lead actors from the first two films will be returning to the screen. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum will thus reprise their roles as Schmidt and Jenko, while Ice Cube is set to reprise his role as Captain Dickson.
Rodney Rothman is directing the film. Among other projects, Rothman served as a screenwriter and director on "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse". Together with Jonah Hill and Meghan Malloy, Rothman also co-wrote the screenplay for "24 Jump Street". Phil Lord and Chris Miller, who previously directed "21 Jump Street" and "22 Jump Street", are on board as producers.
The first two films were a mix of action, buddy comedy, and high school parody. In "21 Jump Street", Schmidt and Jenko had to go undercover at a high school, while "22 Jump Street" took the concept even further and sent the two cops to college. Exactly how the story will unfold in "24 Jump Street", however, is not yet known. Sony is keeping the plot under wraps for now.
Why the New Movie Is Called 24 Jump Street
Essentially, it's likely a self-deprecating joke. Just how much the film series likes to poke fun at itself is evident, for example, at the end of "22 Jump Street". During the credits, a series of brief scenes show the two protagonists, Morton Schmidt and Greg Jenko, taking on a string of additional undercover missions that become increasingly absurd and are intended to serve as premises for potential sequels such as "27 Jump Street: Culinary School" or "42 Jump Street: Beauty School".
Just how much fun the filmmakers are having with the title "24 Jump Street" is evident in a social media post by producer Neal H. Moritz. We're shown the film's script, which reads:
"'24 Jump Street': It took so long to make we had to skip one."
While this is primarily meant tongue-in-cheek, it likely also refers to a previously planned sequel of a somewhat different kind that ultimately didn't come to fruition. Titled "MIB 23", it was supposed to be a crossover between the "Jump Street" universe and the alien-populated world of the sci-fi comedy "Men in Black".
Treasure Island, Narcs, and Helldivers Also Get New Release Dates
In addition to "24 Jump Street", Sony has simultaneously announced or adjusted several other theatrical releases. Among them is "The Surgeon", a thriller by Roshan Sethi, which is set to premiere on April 2, 2027. Michelle Yeoh takes on the lead role. She plays a talented doctor who is kidnapped and forced to operate on a mysterious patient.
The coming-of-age comedy "Narcs" is also set to hit theaters on August 20, 2027. Mason Thames stars in the film, though the plot has been kept under wraps so far. For director John Phillips, the project also marks his feature film debut behind the camera. Phillips previously worked as a screenwriter on films such as "No Hard Feelings" and "Dirty Grandpa".
In contrast, the planned release dates for two other Sony productions have been moved up. "Grandgear", the new film from "Godzilla Minus One" director Takashi Yamazaki, will be released slightly earlier than previously planned. Instead of February 18, 2028, the film is now set to premiere on January 14, 2028. The news is likely less welcome for fans of video game adaptations. "Helldivers", based on the successful video game series of the same name, has been pushed back significantly. The theatrical release was originally scheduled for November 10, 2027. Sony has now rescheduled the film for June 9, 2028.
Meanwhile, Sony is also working on a new film adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's classic "Treasure Island". Hugh Jackman and Ridley Scott are set to bring the project to the big screen together on November 11, 2027. Ridley Scott will direct, while Jack Thorne, known for the Netflix series "Adolescence", is writing the screenplay.
