Emma Watson is Back in the Movie Business
The actress returns after a 5-year hiatus
"Breaking out of the cage": with these words, "Harry Potter" star Emma Watson announced her return to the film world and shared her personal reasons that moved her to take a 5-year break.
Emma Watson is undoubtedly still one of the most popular actresses in Hollywood. In her role of Hermione Granger, the now 33-year-old made film history and may have forever acted her way into the hearts of many people. Although Watson has starred in many major productions, she seemed to be at odds with her career and decided to take a break in 2019 after appearing in Greta Gerwig's "Little Women".
She spoke to Financial Times about her absence from the film business and talks about very personal reasons:
"I wasn't very happy, if I'm being honest. I think I felt a bit caged. The thing I found really hard was that I had to go out and sell something that I really didn't have very much control over."
Recognizing and accepting her dissatisfaction was an important step for Watson in regaining control of her life:
"And I started to realise that I only wanted to stand in front of things where if someone was going to give me flak about it, I could say, in a way that didn't make me hate myself, 'Yes, I screwed up, it was my decision, I should have done better.'"
The actress also had doubts regarding possible work behind the camera - taking on a potential directing role seemed beyond her reach:
"I don't think I had any confidence [...]. I know it seems weird. I mean, I grew up on a film set."
But Watson has now overcome the phases of self-doubt and lack of self-confidence and wants to prove it with a new project - possibly even as a director or producer. However, she did not reveal any further details. According to rumors, her next project may be the tragicomedy "While We're Young" or a drama called "Queen of the Tearling", for which Watson is listed as a producer.
However, it is also possible that it is a completely unknown project that has remained undisclosed to us so far. Either way, Emma Watson's comeback is likely to make many people happy.
