The Minions are back! This summer, the yellow fan favorites will once again hit the big screen in "Minions & Monsters." A first trailer has already given us a glimpse of the new Minions adventure – while also leaving fans with more than a few questions. When does the new movie take place? Where are the familiar Minions Kevin, Stuart, and Bob? And who are all these new Minions?

Here's what Minions & Monsters is about

The first plot details have already been released: "Minions & Monsters" is the rambunctious, ridiculous and totally true story of how the Minions conquered Hollywood, became movie stars, lost everything, unleashed monsters onto the world and then banded together to try and save the planet from the mayhem they had just created.

However, "Minions & Monsters" isn't really "Minions 3." The film isn't a sequel – it's more of a spin-off or prequel. The film is set in the 1920s. The film thus takes a trip back to Hollywood's silent film era. We've covered all other open questions about "Minions & Monster" in more detail in a dedicated article.

When will the trailer be released?

Perhaps the upcoming second trailer will provide further answers. According to Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman, it is set to be released today, May 7. As soon as the trailer is available, you'll find it here in this article, in the KinoCheck app, and on our YouTube channel.

When is Minions & Monsters coming out?

The third "Minions" movie is just around the corner: You can see "Minions & Monsters" in theaters starting July 1, 2026! We're excited to see what new details the second trailer will reveal. Until then, you can also watch the first trailer again.

The Minions Phenomenon

With their new adventure, the Minions are thus opening another chapter in one of the most successful animated series of recent years. However, the little yellow troublemakers did not originate in their own movies, but famously in the "Despicable Me" franchise, which began in 2010 with the first film of the same name.

The focus here is on the supervillain Gru, who, with the help of his clumsy sidekicks, attempts to pull off the greatest heists in world history – and in the process increasingly develops a surprisingly human side. The Minions initially served as comic relief, but quickly evolved into the secret stars of the films.

The Minions Movies

The enormous popularity led to the yellow creatures getting their own film series. "Minions" told their origin story: Since the dawn of time, the Minions have been searching for the greatest and meanest leader. The mix of slapstick, fantasy language, and lovingly chaotic humor struck a chord with audiences worldwide. The sequel, "Minions 2: The Rise of Gru," built on this and, for the first time, explored in greater detail the connection between the Minions and the young Gru.

Despicable Me

At the same time, the main series continued to evolve with "Despicable Me 2," "Despicable Me 3," and most recently "Despicable Me 4." In all these films, the Minions remain a central part of the recipe for success: their anarchic energy, their incomprehensible yet somehow understandable language, and their penchant for chaos regularly elicit the biggest laughs.

The Rise of the Minions

But the Minions have long been more than just supporting characters in a film series. They have become a global pop culture phenomenon. Their design is iconic, their voices unmistakable, and their popularity extends far beyond the cinema – from memes on social media to all kinds of merchandise. Characters like Kevin, Stuart, and Bob in particular have established themselves as firm audience favorites, even though the Minions essentially function as an interchangeable mass.

Minions & Monsters: Anticipation and Curiosity

That's precisely why a film like "Minions & Monsters" sparks extra curiosity: a new setting, new characters, and a different narrative approach offer the chance to further expand the world of the Minions.

One thing is certain: the mix of slapstick, heart, and quirky ideas has made the Minions one of the most defining animation phenomena of the 21st century. With "Minions & Monsters," the next attempt is now underway to reimagine this recipe for success – and perhaps surprise us all over again.
