Horror fans have reason to celebrate: "Smile 3" is making more progress! However, there's a major change happening behind the scenes. As the industry magazine Variety reports, Parker Finn will no longer be directing the film. Instead, a new director is set to take over.

This time, the sequel to the popular horror series will be directed by David Bruckner. Bruckner made a name for himself primarily with the 2022 "Hellraiser" reboot. Prior to that, he directed the psychological thriller "The Ritual" for Netflix, as well as the supernatural horror film "The Night House", starring Rebecca Hall.

But even aside from "Smile 3", the director is currently quite busy. For Warner Bros., Bruckner is working on a remake of the sci-fi horror classic "The Blob". He will also be directing a remake of the classic "Possession". The film is currently scheduled for release on June 11, 2027. What Bruckner's version of "Smile" will look like remains a mystery for now. Details about the plot of the third film and a potential release date have not yet been announced.

The Success of the Smile Films

In the first "Smile", the story centered on Sosie Bacon as a therapist whose life increasingly spirals out of control following the disturbing death of a patient. Suddenly, she finds herself pursued by people with eerie grins who seem intent on driving her mad. "Smile" grossed approximately $105 million in the U.S. alone. Worldwide, it brought in about $217 million.

"Smile 2", on the other hand, shifted the story to the glitzy world of pop music. Naomi Scott took on the role of a successful singer who, shortly before her big tour, is confronted with increasingly unsettling events. With a comparatively modest budget of $28 million, the sequel grossed about $69 million in the U.S. and a total of $139 million worldwide. While it didn't quite match the success of its predecessor, it was still lucrative enough to justify another sequel.

A Simple Concept with a Big Impact

One of the main reasons for the success of the "Smile" films is the underlying idea. The image of a person with an unnaturally wide, fixed grin feels both familiar and deeply unsettling. This visual motif runs consistently through both films and creates numerous eerie moments. In addition, the films rely heavily on psychological horror. Instead of relying solely on jump scares, the series creates a sense of constant paranoia. The main characters increasingly begin to doubt their own perceptions, which also triggers a sense of uncertainty in the audience.

Strong Characters and Emotional Themes

Another reason for the positive reception lies in the films' characters and themes. Already in the first installment, the focus is on a protagonist who must grapple with trauma, fear, and feelings of guilt. In "Smile 2," this approach is expanded upon. There, pop star Skye Riley falls increasingly under the influence of the eerie phenomenon while preparing for a major world tour. The film combines horror with the pressures of public scrutiny, fame, and mental strain – themes that many viewers find particularly relevant. These emotional layers ensure that the films are more than just shock entertainment. They tap into real fears and blend them with supernatural horror.
