Here's what The Magician's Nephew is about

"The Magician's Nephew" tells the prequel to the famous world of Narnia. Chronologically, the new film takes place before the well-known Disney adaptations "The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe", "Prince Caspian", and "The Voyage of the Dawn Treader".

Through the experiments of Digory's uncle, the two children, Digory and Polly, are transported to other dimensions and witness the lion Aslan creating the world of Narnia with his song. On their journey, they also encounter the White Witch. The novel combines adventure with a creation story and lays the foundation for the entire "Chronicles of Narnia" series. However, it is not yet known exactly how closely the film will follow the source material. Regarding the plot, Netflix has issued only this statement:

"Academy Award–nominated filmmaker Greta Gerwig brings C. S. Lewis's beloved story 'The Magician's Nephew' to the screen for the first time in a sweeping adventure that invites dreamers of all ages to experience the creation of Narnia."

A few weeks ago, a first set photo began circulating that revealed a special aspect of the story. Director Greta Gerwig is seated in the foreground, with several cast members and crew members standing behind her. What makes the snapshot particularly intriguing are the actors' cars and costumes. They suggest that the story is set in a different time period than in C. S. Lewis's original novel. Shortly thereafter, the first official images were released via Empire, featuring, among others, Daniel Craig as Uncle Andrew.

Speaking about her "Narnia" adaptation, Gerwig says, according to Netflix, that she was still a child when she first read "The Magician's Nephew". She calls it an honor to bring this world to life. She adds:

"Because of C. S. Lewis's 'The Chronicles of Narnia', I believed in magic and hidden worlds and adventure. I believed that anywhere could be enchanted and that anyone could be swept up into an epic. That wonder and awe was available to everyone, even ordinary people like me. ... It transformed me."

It remains to be seen whether Gerwig will cause as much of a stir with "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" as she did with her "Barbie" adaptation. Between 2005 and 2010, three "Narnia" films – each based on a different novel by C. S. Lewis – made it to the big screen. Together, they grossed $1.5 billion worldwide. The literary universe on which the film is based is also hugely popular and a global success story. The seven "Narnia" books have sold more than 120 million copies in 70 different countries. In addition, they have been translated into more than 60 different languages to date. The prospects for the success of "The Magician's Nephew" are therefore anything but bleak.

The Cast

The cast of "The Magician's Nephew" is definitely impressive. At the center are two newcomers: David McKenna as Digory and Beatrice Campbell as Polly. They're joined by a wealth of acting experience: the cast includes longtime "James Bond" actor Daniel Craig as Andrew Ketterley, as well as Hollywood legend Meryl Streep, who lends her voice to Aslan. The White Witch is portrayed by "Sex Education" star Emma Mackey. In the Disney films, she was portrayed by Oscar winner Tilda Swinton. The Netflix adaptation also features "Drive" star Carey Mulligan and "Game of Thrones" actor Ciarán Hinds. The cast is rounded out by Kobna Holdbrook-Smith ("The Gorge") , Denise Gough ("Andor"), and Susan Wokoma ("Enola Holmes"). "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" hits theaters on February 12, 2027. The Netflix premiere follows on April 2, 2027.
