Clayface: First Reactions to the New DC Horror Film – Here's What Critics Are Saying

After Superman and Supergirl, DC Fans Can Expect a Completely Different Kind of Movie

A new DC movie is imminent! With "Clayface," a unique comic book adaptation is coming soon to theaters. Following the relatively traditional superhero blockbusters "Superman" and "Supergirl," the DCU is taking a completely different approach with its next film: "Clayface" falls squarely into the body horror genre. Can this genre blend of superhero story and body horror work? Some U.S. critics, members of the press, and influencers have already had the chance to see the film ahead of its release—and the reactions have been largely positive.

It's often emphasized that "Clayface" is a thoroughly unique superhero movie. A brutal DC film centered on an antihero (or perhaps even a villain), a mix of body horror and a love story, and a tragic character study? Based on the initial reactions, it seems we can expect all of that.

The performance of lead actor Tom Rhys Harries has also received plenty of praise. Another recurring observation is that many reviewers describe "Clayface" as a brutal and dark film. The film has received an R rating —which only underscores the critics' statements. Critic Peter Gray sums it up as follows:

And what about the connection to the DCU? Based on the initial reactions, "Clayface" appears to stand on its own. Steven Weintraub of the entertainment magazine Collider writes:

"Clayface was fantastic. An awesome addition to the DCU that doesn't require any knowledge of DC to enjoy."

Some critics have compared "Clayface" to "The Fly." The comparison is obvious—after all, David Cronenberg's cult film starring Jeff Goldblum is one of the most popular examples of the body horror genre. Sam Raimi's "Darkman" was also mentioned in this context.

What Clayface Is About

But what exactly is "Clayface" about? The official plot description reveals more:

"Matt Hagen's meteoric rise from Gotham street kid to Hollywood leading man is tragically cut short when a local crime boss's actions leave him horribly disfigured. Abandoned by his team and with nothing left, Matt seeks out a cutting edge treatment that miraculously returns him to his former self… but also has troubling physical and psychological side effects that spiral him down a destructive path of all-consuming revenge."

You'll soon be able to experience "Clayface" on the big screen. The film hits theaters on October 23, 2026. Still unsure whether you want to see "Clayface"? Check out the latest trailer to get a good idea of what to expect:
