KPop Demon Hunters 2: Will We Have to Wait Even Longer for the Netflix Hit's Sequel?

There is great anticipation for "KPop Demon Hunters 2" – but what is the status of the sequel? Sony Pictures Animation executives recently commented on the current status in an interview with industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter. Topics included the long wait and also the fate of Jinu.

According to Sony Pictures Animation President Kristine Belson, the two directors, Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, are currently still busy with their PR tour for "KPop Demon Hunters". After all, it's Awards Season – and the animated hit is among the Oscar nominees. KPop Demon Hunters has a chance of winning awards in the categories "Animated Feature Film" and "Original Song" (for "Golden"). For the directors, this means that they have a number of interviews and events coming up. Only after that will planning for part 2 really get underway.

When will KPop Demon Hunters 2 be released?

The latest reports suggest that the sequel will be released in 2029. Belson was asked whether the wait could be even longer due to the lengthy production process. Her response: she touched her nose with her pointer finger. This "on the nose" gesture can be interpreted as an indication that the assessment of a potentially longer production timeline is accurate. Fans should therefore be prepared for the possibility that "KPop Demon Hunters 2" may not be released until 2030 or later.

What about Jinu?

Damien de Froberville, also president of Sony Pictures Animation, hinted in a side note that Jinu's story may not be over yet. As a reminder, at the end of the film, he sacrificed himself for Rumi.

"The world is so rich – the world of the demons and the pop star [element], what happened to Jinu. There's so much we could expand into."

What can we expect in KPop Demon Hunters 2?

"KPop Demon Hunters" became an absolute movie phenomenon in 2025. Within a few months, the animated film became the most successful Netflix title of all time. The project also set new standards in music: the songs stormed the charts, and Rumi, Zoey, and Mira became global pop icons virtually overnight. Given this triumphant success, it was clear early on that the story would continue – and in early November, confirmation reports for part 2 finally arrived.

But what direction will "KPop Demon Hunters 2" take? Will the plot delve even deeper into Rumi's past? Director Maggie Kang hinted that the sequel could possibly focus on other aspects. While working on the first film, the team developed numerous ideas that ultimately didn't make it into the final cut. She explains:

"We've set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there's a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there's only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes."

One thing is certain: the universe of "KPop Demon Hunters" offers plenty of material for new stories. Originally, the creators also wanted to focus more on Mira and Zoey. But it "just wasn't the movie for those stories". We therefore strongly assume that both characters will play a bigger role in the sequel.

Unanswered questions

But Rumi's story is also far from over. One of the most exciting unanswered questions from the first film concerns her extraordinary origins: she is not only a demon hunter, but also bears the characteristic marks of demons. The reason for this lies in her ancestry – her father was a demon.

Apart from this revelation, however, her past remains largely hidden. Who is this mysterious father? And what role does his story play in Rumi's own destiny? It is precisely these unanswered questions about her family that could play a decisive role in the sequel. We therefore hope that we won't have to wait too long.
