The novel "Children of Blood and Bone" became a hit. Author Tomi Adeyemi has created a bestseller that has since been adapted into a film and will soon be in theaters. As a sneak peek, the first images from the fantasy movie "Children of Blood and Bone" have now been released, which we'll show you throughout this article.

The film's cast includes Thuso Mbedu as Zélie, Tosin Cole as Tzain, Amandla Stenberg as Princess Amari, Damson Idris as Prince Inan, Cynthia Erivo as Admiral Kaea, Chiwetel Ejiofor as King Saran, Regina King as Queen Nehanda, Lashana Lynch as Jumoke, Idris Elba as Lekan, and Viola Davis as Mama Agba. Gina Prince-Bythewood, known for the 2022 film "The Woman King," among other projects, directed the film. She has also made a name for herself in the world of television: Over the years, the director has helmed episodes of various series, including the premiere episode of the Marvel series "Cloak & Dagger."

Trouble brews just a few months before the theatrical release

But what is the film actually about? The story of the novel adaptation is described as follows:

"In the epic fantasy world of Orïsha, a young woman embarks on a dangerous journey to reclaim the magical power that was violently stolen from her people. Together with her brother, she allies herself with the king's daughter and son to rebel against his brutal rule."

The release date for the film adaptation has already been set: "Children of Blood and Bone" hits theaters on January 15, 2027. However, just a few months before the theatrical release, there's trouble behind the scenes. Tomi Adeyemi recently publicly distanced herself from the screen adaptation of her best-selling novel. According to media reports, there was also a falling-out between the author and actress Amandla Stenberg. On social media, Adeyemi explained that she hadn't seen the film and didn't plan to watch it. She wrote to a fan in the comments:

"I do not mind anyone going to watch the film. I wrote this for us. I fought for us. I'm just laying down my sword and officially separating my name because I can't keep being hurt and attacked behind the scenes."

There are other novels as well

A few years ago, there was already a stir surrounding the planned adaptation of "Children of Blood and Bone." The project was originally in development at Lucasfilm. In a 2022 report, The Hollywood Reporter cited unnamed sources who claimed that Adeyemi had wanted more say in the film adaptation. The author reportedly advocated for writing the screenplay herself – a request that Lucasfilm did not grant, according to the sources. Ultimately, however, Paramount acquired the rights to the material. This apparently led to some changes on the screenwriting front as well: In the now-produced film adaptation of "Children of Blood and Bone," Tomi Adeyemi is credited as a screenwriter alongside director Gina Prince-Bythewood.

Given the controversies, one can only hope that fans of the novel will still enjoy the film adaptation. In any case, the book on which the film is based enjoys great popularity and was also well-received by critics, who highlighted, among other things, the coming-of-age story's examination of oppression and racism. If the film is successful, it's quite possible that we'll see even more of the world of Orïsha in the future. After all, the novel "Children of Blood and Bone" is only the first part of the "Legacy of Orïsha" trilogy. After Adeyemi made her debut as a novelist with the book in 2018, the second installment, "Children of Virtue and Vengeance," followed the next year. Finally, in 2024, the third book, "Children of Anguish and Anarchy," was published.
