The film is a fictional biopic that focuses on Donald Trump's early business activities and political ambitions in the 1970s and 1980s. In particular, it highlights the formative years in which Trump made a name for himself as a real estate developer and was shaped by Roy Cohn, a controversial lawyer and political influencer.

In terms of acting, "The Apprentice" is carried by a powerful portrayal of Trump's character. Sebastian Stan delivers a nuanced performance that captures both the charming and manipulative side of the future president. His relationship with Roy Cohn, played by Jeremy Strong, is the emotional center of the film and highlights the dynamic between teacher and student, both of whom are willing to cross moral boundaries to achieve their goals.

These are the Themes of the Trump Movie

Director Ali Abbasi uses a mix of drama and historical narrative to show Trump's rise to media stardom and his relationships with powerful figures in New York's elite. The movie also shines a spotlight on Trump's business methods, his flair for self-promotion and his early political ambitions. Cohn is portrayed as a key figure who teaches Trump the art of public manipulation and the use of power.

The movie focuses heavily on the moral and ethical issues surrounding Trump's rise, including his handling of bankruptcies, real estate speculation and media manipulation. Abbasi attempts to explore the man behind the public figure and shed light on the motives that made Trump the most powerful man in the world.

A central theme of the film is also the relationship between Trump and Ivana Trump, his first wife. One controversial scene shows an alleged rape which, according to the film, was brought up by Ivana in divorce proceedings against Trump. This portrayal led to controversy and legal threats from Trump's lawyers even before the film's release.

Cohn himself is a complex figure who became infamous in the McCarthy era, particularly for his role in the anti-communist witch hunts of the 1950s. He is portrayed in the film not only as Trump's advisor, but also as someone who helped Trump navigate legal gray areas to maximize his economic interests. This relationship was crucial to Trump's rise to New York high society and influenced his business practices and political tactics for decades.

Another aspect of the movie is an examination of Trump's complicated relationship with the truth. His ability to manipulate reality to his advantage is shown in numerous scenes in which he intentionally spreads misinformation or twists facts to his advantage. This raises the question of whether Trump is a product of the media culture that he himself has helped to shape, or whether he has deliberately used this culture to consolidate his power.

The movie's direction is characterized by a dense atmosphere that makes the tensions in Trump's personal and business life palpable. Abbasi uses dark, almost oppressive imagery to portray the coldness and unscrupulousness of the business world in which Trump operates.

Initial Reactions

"The Apprentice" premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it caused a stir even before its official release. Critics praised the movie's portrayal of the complex relationship between Trump and Cohn and its astute analysis of the power structures that have made Trump who he is today. However, there was also criticism of the way the movie portrays some controversial aspects of Trump's life, particularly his relationship with women.

"The Apprentice: The Trump Story" will be released in movie theaters on October 11, 2024.
