A Minecraft Movie Squared: Everything We Know So Far About Minecraft 2
Here's all the details and theories you need to know about the sequel to the blockbuster hit!

Destroyed movie theaters, and box office gold: The "Minecraft" movie definitely made headlines. Now the sequel is set to be released soon and aims to build on that success. The title has been revealed, another Hollywood star has joined the cast, and one question remains: Can Part 2 recreate the hype?
The Billion-Dollar Phenomenon Continues
A quick look back: turning a sandbox game with virtually no story into a movie – that was widely seen as a huge gamble. The project spent years stuck in production hell. But in 2025, "A Minecraft Movie" finally hit theaters and became a massive success: the video game adaptation went on to gross nearly one billion U.S. dollars at the global box office. Its blend of blocky visuals, absurd humor, and a touch of nostalgia clearly struck a chord with audiences. So expectations for the sequel are sky-high. But how do you top a billion-dollar phenomenon like that?
The Story: Will the Minecraft Sequel Take Us to the End?
If you stayed in the theater for the post-credits scene in the first movie, you already know what sets the stage for the sequel. When Steve returns to his old house, he meets a mysterious woman: Alex. Director Jared Hess has already made it crystal clear that she'll play a central role in the sequel. Introduced in 2014, Alex was the first default female player character available as an alternative to Steve. Meanwhile, we finally know who will portray the iconic heroine on the big screen: none other than Kirsten Dunst! Most of you probably know her as Mary Jane from the "Spider-Man" movies starring Tobey Maguire.
But who will our heroes have to face this time? Jared Hess has repeatedly emphasized that many iconic elements from the game are still waiting for their big moment. We're pretty much certain this means one thing: the story is finally heading to the "End", and we'll encounter not only the eerie Endermen, but also the monstrous Ender Dragon! There's no official information on this yet, though the first teaser poster does offer a few hints: the purple glow could point to the End, but it could also refer to the enchanted items found in the game.
The Official Title, Cast & Crew
Recently, the filmmakers also finally revealed the movie's title. The sequel is officially called "A Minecraft Movie: Squared". It's a clever play on words that not only serves as a reference to the number 2, but is also another hint at the new dimension and, of course, perfectly captures the spirit of the world's block-based design.
Behind the scenes, little has changed: Jared Hess is returning as director, and Chris Galletta is once again writing the screenplay. Jason Momoa as Garrett "The Garbage Man" Garrison and Jack Black as Steve are also confirmed to return, along with Danielle Brooks, Jennifer Coolidge, and Matt Berry. A reunion with Sebastian Hansen as Henry or Emma Myers as Natalie seems very likely, but hasn't been confirmed yet.
The Confirmed Release Date for Minecraft 2
The movie's theatrical release was almost set for a fierce box office showdown: "Minecraft 2" was originally scheduled to hit theaters on the same day as the upcoming sequel to "The Simpsons Movie". However, Disney has since reconsidered and pushed back the yellow family's appearance on the big screen by two months. Minecraft fans are in luck: "A Minecraft Movie: Squared" will arrive in theaters on July 23, 2027.
That's when we'll find out: Was the success mainly driven by curiosity about the first game adaptation? Was it the viral hype surrounding the "Chicken Jockey"? The event-like atmosphere that wreaked havoc in movie theaters around the world? Or did the movie itself end up winning over audiences? Only then, we believe, will the sequel really have a chance of becoming another hit. Viral trends are almost impossible to predict – and even harder to replicate.
