The end of the world is not over yet: Following the surprise success of the disaster film "Greenland", Gerard Butler will soon be returning in the sequel. The start date for "Greenland 2: Migration" has now been announced.

The Garrity family is at the center of the films. The first part is about an interstellar comet that threatens the Earth. The father of the family, played by Butler, tries to find a safe place together with his wife Allison and son Nathan. After the events of the first movie, the Garrity family now leaves Greenland. They embark on a journey through the wastelands of Europe to find a new home.

In addition to Butler, "Deadpool" star Morena Baccarin is also back. Amber Rose Revah, known from the Marvel series "The Punisher", is part of the cast as well. Ric Roman Waugh will once again be directing the film. He previously worked with Butler on the action films "Angel Has Fallen" and "Kandahar". The US theatrical release of the film has now been announced for January 9, 2026.

This is what the first film of 2020 is about

The first "Greenland" film starts with a typical doomsday scenario and quickly develops into an intense fight for survival. The impact of a comet fragment destroys parts of Florida – but that's just the beginning. Scientists warn that the rest of the comet "Clarke" will hit the Earth and wipe out life as we know it. The government responds with an emergency evacuation of selected citizens – including the Garrity family. The film follows John (Gerard Butler) and his family on a dangerous odyssey across an increasingly chaotic country. One important question is: how far will a father go to save his family?

Gerard Butler's action disaster films

However, "Greenland" is not the only action disaster film in which Gerard Butler can be seen. In recent years, the actor has carved out his very own niche in modern disaster films with a political or global impact. Whether natural disasters, terrorist attacks or an impending world war – Butler is on hand when everything threatens to collapse. While not all films are classic disaster films at first glance, they are often linked by a recurring motif: an emergency has occurred – and only one person can avert it.

Geostorm

In "Geostorm", the climate catastrophe literally becomes a weapon. The earth is protected by a global satellite system that can control extreme weather phenomena – until it fails. When cities are suddenly devastated by gigantic storms and cold waves, Gerard Butler as scientist Jake Lawson must find the cause and stop the catastrophe. The film is a prime example of the science fiction disaster movie in its purest form: weather damage, explosions, global threat. The film delivers images of destruction and shows Butler as a global savior.

The "Has Fallen" series: Olympus, London & Angel

"Olympus Has Fallen" marked the beginning of an action series that combines terror scenarios with personal heroic moments. Butler plays Mike Banning, a former Secret Service agent who becomes a lone warrior when the center of power is threatened. In "Olympus Has Fallen", the White House is attacked by North Korean terrorists. Butler must rescue the president and avert a national catastrophe. In "London Has Fallen", a large-scale attack takes place at a funeral in London. And in "Angel Has Fallen", this time Banning himself is the target of an assassination attempt. When he is falsely blamed for an attack on the president, he has to go into hiding – and at the same time stop the actual perpetrators.

While these films are formally considered action thrillers, they clearly follow the disaster pattern: an institution (the government, public safety) collapses, the country is on the brink of collapse and one man must save what can be saved.

Hunter Killer

In "Hunter Killer", Butler, as the captain of a US submarine, is tasked with rescuing the Russian president from the hands of coup plotters – and preventing a third world war at the same time. The film combines classic Cold War suspense with modern action elements. Butler once again plays the role of the man who averts disaster at the last second. Although "Hunter Killer" is more of a submarine thriller, the catastrophe is also within reach here. The film thrives on the constant threat and the feeling that a single mistake could destroy everything.

The hero in a state of emergency

Whether triggered by nature, terror or political escalation, the focus in Butler's films is often on a catastrophic scenario that is only just averted by his intervention. The action catastrophe films with Butler will now continue in 2026 with "Greenland 2".
