KPop Demon Hunters 2: Sequel to the Netflix Hit Set to Hit Theaters

Everything We Know About the Sequel So Far

4 min reading time

"KPop Demon Hunters" was undoubtedly one of the biggest pop culture events of 2025. No wonder—a sequel has been a done deal for quite some time. Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos recently spoke at the industry event Bloomberg Screentime about the planned release of "KPop Demon Hunters 2." Sarandos announced:

"When the 'KPop Demon Hunters' sequel comes, you can expect a very broad theatrical release."

So it's safe to assume that the sequel will be shown in theaters worldwide for a certain period of time before its streaming debut on Netflix. This strategy is not unusual for Netflix. In the past, high-profile projects in particular have been shown in theaters for a short time before their streaming release. A similar approach is expected in the future, such as with Greta Gerwig's "Narnia: The Magician's Nephew" or David Fincher's "The Further Mis-Adventures of Cliff Booth."

The Success of K-Pop Demon Hunters

"KPop Demon Hunters" centers on the pop stars Rumi, Mira, and Zoey. The trio leads a double life: as demon hunters, the three also fight supernatural threats on the side. For Netflix, "KPop Demon Hunters" proved to be an absolute hit, rising to become the streaming service's most successful film. In addition, songs like "Golden" went viral, and "KPop Demon Hunters" won the Academy Award for Animated Feature Film.

Release Date for KPop Demon Hunters 2

Specific details about the sequel's plot are not yet known. As with the first film, the duo Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans are directing. The film's release date is reportedly scheduled for 2029. Recently, however, there has been speculation that the film might be released even later due to the high production costs.

There are already some initial clues and theories regarding the plot and the film's possible focus. In our concise movie preview, we've compiled all the details known so far about "KPop Demon Hunters 2":

What Could KPop Demon Hunters 2 Be About?

Director Maggie Kang mentioned in several interviews that during the development of the first film, the team had quite a few ideas that ultimately didn't make it into the story. Kang explains:

"We've set up so much for potential backstory. Obviously, there's a lot of questions that are left unanswered and areas that are not explored. We had to do that because there's only so much movie you could tell in 85 minutes."

One thing is clear: the "KPop Demon Hunters" universe still offers plenty of potential for further stories. Originally, the creative team had also planned to give Mira and Zoey a more prominent role. However, it "just wasn't the movie for those stories." It therefore stands to reason that the two characters could play a much more prominent role in the sequel.

But there are other unresolved questions that could be addressed in "KPop Demon Hunters 2." These include, among other things, Rumi's extraordinary backstory: She is not only a demon hunter but also bears the characteristic marks of demons. The reason for this: her father was a demon. This background may be explored further in the sequel. The fate of Jinu also remains open; his story doesn't necessarily have to end after the dramatic finale of the first film.

The Directors Talk About KPop Demon Hunters 2

But whatever the sequel may focus on, both directors have already expressed their excitement. Maggie Kang shared the following on Netflix's Tudum portal:

"I feel immense pride as a Korean filmmaker that the audience wants more from this Korean story and our Korean characters. There's so much more to this world we have built, and I'm excited to show you. This is only the beginning."

Her colleague Chris Appelhans emphasizes how much the film's characters have grown on them:

"These characters are like family to us, their world has become our second home. We're excited to write their next chapter, challenge them, and watch them evolve — and continue pushing the boundaries of how music, animation, and story can come together."
