The franchise began in the '90s

The most recent films in the adventure series proved to be massive box office hits. "Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle" (2017) grossed $962 million worldwide. It was then clear that a sequel was inevitable. In 2019, the sequel "Jumanji: The Next Level" was released and grossed another $801 million. However, the films actually trace their origins back to the 1990s.

The first "Jumanji" movie was released in 1995. Directed by Joe Johnston, it starred Robin Williams in the lead role. "Jumanji: Open World" is said to include a small homage to that original film. The original dice from that film are set to appear in the latest sequel. In 2005, there was a spin-off titled "Zathura: A Space Adventure," starring Josh Hutcherson and Kristen Stewart. The movie from director Jon Favreau is also part of the "Jumanji" franchise. Will the film series actually come to a close with "Jumanji: Open World"? We'll see. In any case, we wouldn't be too surprised if there were another sequel, spin-off, or reboot at some point.
