The upcoming "Call of Duty" movie is slowly taking shape. Although Paramount Pictures had remained tight-lipped about plot details since the official announcement in September 2025, there is now information about the direction director Peter Berg plans to take the film.

At Fantastic Fest in New York, Berg announced that the film is indeed set in the popular "Modern Warfare" universe. Hollywood insider Daniel Richtman recently reported that a modern setting is planned, which would certainly fit the video game source material. It remains unclear which characters will take center stage or whether familiar characters from the games will be featured. Nevertheless, the choice of setting alone is already generating a lot of excitement among fans.

The plot of the "Modern Warfare" games revolves primarily around Captain John Price and the legendary Task Force 141. Together, they fight international terrorist organizations and repeatedly face off against their arch-enemy Vladimir Makarov, who is one of the most famous villains in the entire series. Whether Price, Soap MacTavish, Ghost, or other popular characters will actually appear in the film remains to be seen.

The film's screenplay was written by Taylor Sheridan, who with productions such as "Sicario", "Hell or High Water", and "Yellowstone", is one of the most successful storytellers in the action and military genres. "Call of Duty" is set to be released on June 30, 2028.

Call of Duty: Why the shooter series has shaped the genre for over 20 years

Hardly any other video game series has had such a lasting impact on the first-person shooter genre as "Call of Duty". Since the first installment in 2003, the series has evolved from a World War II shooter into one of the world's most successful entertainment brands. Millions of players pick up the latest installment every year, while other shooters are regularly compared to the franchise. But what accounts for the success of "Call of Duty", and what significance does the series still hold today in the highly competitive shooter market?

From World War II to a Global Phenomenon

When the first "Call of Duty" was released, "Medal of Honor" still dominated the World War II shooter genre. However, developer Infinity Ward set new standards at the time. Instead of having the player act as a lone warrior, the game conveyed the feeling of being part of a large-scale military offensive. Spectacular staging, cinematic missions, and an intense atmosphere ensured that "Call of Duty" quickly made a name for itself.

The series didn't achieve its definitive breakthrough, however, until 2007 with "Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare". The shift from World War II to a modern warfare setting revolutionized the series and, at the same time, transformed the entire genre. Suddenly, numerous other shooters began to emulate the cinematic campaigns, modern weapons, and fast-paced gameplay of "Modern Warfare".

Multiplayer as the Recipe for Success

While many players were initially drawn to the series because of the campaign, multiplayer evolved into the true heart of "Call of Duty". The accessible gameplay combines fast-paced matches with a motivating progression system. New weapons, attachments, camouflages, and Prestige ranks keep players engaged for months on end. In particular, the so-called "Create-a-Class" system became a model for numerous other games. The ability to customize gear and tailor it to one's own playstyle is now standard in many shooters.

The fast-paced gunplay also continues to contribute significantly to the series' success to this day. Hardly any other series delivers a similarly direct and fluid gameplay experience. It is precisely this mix of simple controls and high gameplay demands that appeals to both casual gamers and esports fans alike.

Impact on the Entire Industry

Naturally, the success of "Call of Duty" did not go unnoticed by the competition. Over the years, numerous shooters have attempted to emulate the series' style. In particular, the highly cinematic single-player campaigns, featuring spectacular explosions, car chases, and surprising plot twists, became the standard for the genre for many years.

"Call of Duty" also set trends in multiplayer. Experience points, unlock systems, killstreaks, and seasonal content are now standard features in nearly every modern online shooter. Even major competitors like "Battlefield", "Halo", and "Rainbow Six Siege" have, over time, adopted elements that "Call of Duty" made popular.

With the free-to-play battle royale spin-off "Warzone", Activision also proved that the brand can adapt to new trends. The game quickly established itself as one of the most successful battle royale titles and kept the series in the spotlight even outside of the annual main games.

Competition Remains Strong

Despite its enormous significance, "Call of Duty" no longer faces no competition today. Shooters like "Counter-Strike", "Valorant", "Apex Legends", "Fortnite", and "Rainbow Six Siege" cater to different target audiences and have their own unique focuses.

While "Counter-Strike" focuses on tactical gameplay and "Valorant" combines classic shooter mechanics with hero abilities, "Call of Duty" remains true to its accessible action. It is precisely this straightforward gameplay that makes the series appealing to millions of players who prefer fast-paced matches and an immediate sense of achievement.

Nevertheless, the series is regularly the subject of criticism. Annual releases consistently spark discussions about a lack of innovation. Issues such as matchmaking, microtransactions, and technical problems also frequently cause discontent within the community. Despite this criticism, however, sales figures remain at an impressively high level.

More Than Just a Video Game

"Call of Duty" has long since ceased to be just a video game series. The brand has become an integral part of pop culture. New installments regularly dominate the sales charts, well-known streamers and content creators reach millions of viewers with the game, and major tournaments attract international teams.

Added to this is the enormous appeal of the iconic characters. Characters like Captain Price, Ghost, and Soap MacTavish have achieved cult status and are known far beyond the game's actual player base. Their popularity shows that "Call of Duty" has long since created its own iconic figures who can hold their own against the heroes of other major game franchises.
