John Leguizamo Discloses Development of Ice Age 6

The franchise has been in existence for 22 years

By Tom Hartig on

"Ice Age" is probably one of the best-known animated series in existence. 5 movies have been released since 2002, as well as various spin-offs. Actor John Leguizamo is the voice of sloth Sid and has now announced: "Ice Age 6" is in the pipeline!

Leguizamo was a guest on an NPR radio quiz show and mentioned the news in passing. So far there has been no official announcement from Disney, so work on the film is probably still at an early stage.

It is hardly surprising that the "Ice Age" film series is being continued. The franchise has grossed almost a billion dollars in theaters to date and has made over 6 billion dollars in general. Most recently, the spin-off film "The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild" and the short film series "Ice Age: Scrat Tales" were released on Disney+.

Whether "Ice Age 6" will make it back to the movies is not yet known. Either way, fans can look forward to a reunion with the iconic heroes Manny, Diego and Sid.

A Brief Overview of the Ice Age Franchise

The "Ice Age" franchise is a popular animated film series produced by Blue Sky Studios and distributed by 20th Century Fox. The first movie was released in 2002 and the franchise has since become one of the most successful animated series in the world. In total, there are five main films, several short films and specials that follow the adventures of prehistoric animals in a fictionalized version of the Ice Age. The main characters are the mammoth Manfred ("Manny"), the sloth Sid, the saber-toothed tiger Diego and the hilarious saber-toothed squirrel Scrat.

The Films at a Glance

1 Ice Age (2002)

The first film in the series, "Ice Age", was released in 2002 and tells the story of an unusual group of animals who want to return a human baby to his family. The main characters are the grumpy mammoth Manny, the clumsy sloth Sid and the dangerous but ultimately friendly saber-toothed tiger Diego. On their journey, they not only have to brave the challenges of the Ice Age, but also learn to work together as a team. This movie established the humorous and heartwarming dynamic that characterizes the franchise. The mute squirrel Scrat, who desperately tries to find an acorn and often causes chaos as a result, became especially popular.

2 Ice Age 2: The Meltdown (2006)

In the sequel to the first film, Manny, Sid and Diego's world is threatened by the melting of the glaciers. The animals must flee to safety as their valley is flooded by rising water levels. On this journey, Manny meets the mammoth lady Ellie, who thinks she is an opossum. Together with her two possum brothers Crash and Eddie, she provides additional entertainment. The sequel deepens the themes of family and friendship and adds new, humorous characters. Scrat also has his own adventures again as he tries to save his beloved acorn.

3 Ice Age 3: Dawn of the Dinosaurs (2009)

The third movie in the series takes the characters to an underground world, where dinosaurs have survived. Manny and Ellie are expecting a baby, which awakens Sid's desire to start a family, too. However, when Sid finds three dinosaur eggs and decides to adopt them, he is kidnapped by the angry dinosaur mother. Manny, Diego and Ellie set out to rescue Sid and meet the one-eyed, slightly crazy weasel Buck, who has made a name for himself as a dinosaur hunter. This installment adds another dimension to the franchise by presenting a new, exciting underground world while also addressing the importance of family and cohesion.

4 Ice Age 4: Continental Drift (2012)

In the fourth installment, the world of the animals is once again threatened, this time by the movement of the continental plates. Manny, Sid and Diego are separated from their families and friends and have to navigate through dangerous waters on an iceberg as a ship. In the process, they encounter a group of pirates led by the ape Captain Gutt. The movie introduces Sid's grandmother as a new, humorous character who provides some laughs during the journey. The focus of this movie is on overcoming obstacles and reuniting with loved ones as Scrat continues to try to find his acorn - and possibly shifting continents himself in the process.

5 Ice Age 5: Collision Course (2016)

The fifth and final main film in the series to date revolves around an asteroid that appears to be heading towards Earth and could herald the end of the Ice Age. To avert the catastrophe, Manny and his friends must find the cause of the impending impact and stop it. On their journey they meet old and new friends, including Buck, the dinosaur hunter from the third movie. Scrat, whose desperate pursuit of his acorn eventually leads him into space, is indirectly responsible for the impending impact. The film once again combines humorous and adventurous elements with a story about family and solidarity.

Disney+, Short Films and Specials

In addition to the main movies, the franchise has also produced several short films and specials. Scrat in particular, the crazy saber-toothed squirrel, is the protagonist of many of these short films. His efforts to catch an acorn regularly lead to comical and often disastrous situations. The best-known short films include "Gone Nutty" (2002), "No Time for Nuts" (2006), "Scrat's Continental Crack-Up" (2010) and "Scrat Tales" (2022). There was also the spin-off movie "The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild" (2022).
