Fans of "Young Sherlock" can breathe a sigh of relief: the series has been renewed for a second season. Additionally, director Guy Ritchie is back on board, as Amazon has confirmed. He will direct the first episode of season two of the Prime Video series.

"Young Sherlock" tells the story of the early years of the famous master detective Sherlock Holmes. In the series, he is 19 years old when he befriends James Moriarty—his future arch-nemesis—at Oxford University. In this respect, the premise is reminiscent of a series that focuses on the youth of another legendary hero: "Smallville." Similar to "Young Sherlock," "Smallville" centers on the early friendship between the budding Superman, Clark Kent, and his future nemesis, Lex Luthor.

Hero Fiennes Tiffin becomes the young Sherlock Holmes

However, the primary inspiration for "Young Sherlock" was Andrew Lane's book series "Young Sherlock Holmes," which in turn was inspired by the stories of Holmes' creator, Arthur Conan Doyle. The role of the budding master detective is played by Hero Fiennes Tiffin. As the name suggests, he is related to Joseph and Ralph Fiennes—he is the nephew of the two actors. Joseph Fiennes also appears in the series: as Silas Holmes, he plays Sherlock's father. James Moriarty is played by Dónal Finn. Other cast members include Natascha McElhone, Zine Tseng, Max Irons, Numan Acar, Holly Cattle, and Colin Firth.

The first season consists of a total of eight episodes, which were released on Prime Video on March 4, 2026. The release date for the second season of "Young Sherlock" has not yet been announced. The series was created by Matthew Parkhill and developed by Peter Harness and Guy Ritchie. The latter is not only the executive producer but also directed the first two episodes of the first season. With "Young Sherlock," the creators achieved considerable success. According to Amazon, the first season of the series ranks among the top 10 most successful Prime Original seasons of all time. "Young Sherlock" is particularly successful in the UK, India, and Germany.

Not Guy Ritchie's first Sherlock adaptation

Guy Ritchie is no stranger to Sherlock Holmes, however. After all, he already directed the 2009 "Sherlock Holmes" film adaptation. In it, Hollywood star Robert Downey Jr. plays the title role. At his side, Jude Law portrays Dr. John Watson. The sequel, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows," followed in 2011, with Ritchie once again taking the helm. The action-packed adaptations proved to be hits. Both films each grossed over half a billion U.S. dollars at the global box office. A planned third installment is frequently discussed. Most recently, there was talk that the sequel might be set in America instead of London. Whether the film will ultimately be made remains to be seen.

In any case, TV series reinterpretations of the detective stories have been trending for years. "Young Sherlock" is just the latest example. The 2010 British TV series "Sherlock" certainly played a major role in this trend. The modern version is no longer set in the late 19th century, but in present-day London. In it, Sherlock Holmes is portrayed by Benedict Cumberbatch and Dr. John Watson by Martin Freeman. The American counterpart is essentially "Elementary." The stories of the seven-season TV series from 2012 are set in present-day New York. Jonny Lee Miller took on the role of Sherlock Holmes. Dr. John Watson became Dr. Joan Watson, played by Lucy Liu.

"Watson" premiered in 2025. In the TV series, the detective apparently met his end. Watson, this time portrayed by Morris Chestnut, subsequently focuses on medicine and opens a clinic in Pittsburgh. However, it was recently announced that "Watson" is being canceled after only two seasons. Only time will tell whether "Young Sherlock" will enjoy a longer run.
