There is, however, a catch

There's reason for hope for all "Sherlock Holmes" fans: After years of radio silence, screenwriter Chris Brancato has now provided a new update on the status of the long-awaited sequel. In an interview with The Direct, Brancato revealed that a first draft of the screenplay for "Sherlock Holmes 3" is complete! He received support from Michael Panes, who previously worked on "Godfather of Harlem". Panes has already read the finished draft and described it as "very good".

However, the biggest obstacle to production is lead actor Robert Downey Jr.'s packed schedule. The Oscar winner remains one of Hollywood's most in-demand actors and is involved in numerous projects. As long as his schedule cannot be reconciled with the plans for "Sherlock Holmes 3", production will remain on hold.

Brancato therefore made it clear that, despite the willingness of everyone involved, no one can guarantee that the film will actually be made. While the screenwriter remained optimistic, he didn't want to give fans false hope. He said he hoped to see "Sherlock Holmes 3" on the big screen someday. Now, he said, we just have to wait and see how the situation develops.

There isn't much confirmed information about the planned third installment of the series so far. New reports about "Sherlock Holmes 3" have been circulating on and off since 2011. In addition to Downey Jr., it's expected that Jude Law will also be back on board. Behind the camera, however, there appears to be a major change. Instead of Guy Ritchie, Dexter Fletcher was most recently named as the intended director of the third installment. The filmmaker made a name for himself with, among other things, his Elton John biopic "Rocketman."

As for the plot, there have already been hints that the setting might change. Susan Downey, "Sherlock Holmes" producer and wife of lead actor Robert Downey Jr., hinted to Collider last October that the sequel might be set in America instead of London.

Sherlock Holmes Reinvented: The Films Starring Robert Downey Jr.

When the first "Sherlock Holmes" movie hit theaters in 2009, director Guy Ritchie presented an unconventional take on the famous master detective. The character of Sherlock Holmes, originally created by British author Arthur Conan Doyle, was known to many viewers primarily as a calm and logical investigator. Robert Downey Jr., however, gave Holmes a completely new personality: he portrayed him as an eccentric, physically adept, and sometimes chaotic genius who defeats his opponents not only with his intellect but also with martial arts and improvisation.

The First Film: Sherlock Holmes (2009)

In the first film, "Sherlock Holmes" (2009), Holmes, alongside his friend and partner Dr. John Watson, played by Jude Law, faces a mysterious case. The enigmatic Lord Henry Blackwood, portrayed by Mark Strong, appears to have come back to life after his execution and is pursuing a dangerous plan. Holmes must use his extraordinary abilities to uncover the truth behind the mysterious events.

Guy Ritchie's modern direction is particularly striking. Through quick cuts, spectacular action scenes, and the depiction of Holmes's thought processes, the audience experiences how the detective develops his conclusions. This creates an exciting mix of mystery, action, and humor.

The second film: Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011)

The second installment, "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows", was released in 2011 and continues the story of the unusual investigative duo. This time, Holmes faces off against his most famous adversary: Professor James Moriarty. Played by Jared Harris, Moriarty is one of the few people who are Holmes' intellectual equal.

As Europe teeters on the brink of a major conflict, Moriarty attempts to carry out his dangerous plans. Holmes and Watson must once again work together to stop the threat. At the same time, the film highlights even more strongly the special friendship between the two main characters and their contrasting personalities.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law as a Successful Duo

A key reason for the films' success is the chemistry between the two lead actors. Robert Downey Jr. transforms Sherlock Holmes into a humorous, energetic, and modern character. Jude Law shines as Watson, who is not just a companion but an important partner who supports Holmes and sometimes even challenges him.

Conclusion: A Modern Sherlock Holmes

The two films starring Robert Downey Jr. have reinterpreted the well-known character of Sherlock Holmes and made him more accessible to a modern audience. While not all fans of the original books agreed with this action-packed portrayal, the films were a worldwide success. The blend of suspense, humor, and spectacular action made them a unique take on the classic detective stories.
