The fact that "Angry Birds" is returning to the big screen once again is anything but a given. After all, the first movie came out 10 years ago. The second installment followed in 2019. While the first film was a huge success, grossing over $352 million worldwide, the sequel brought in just under $148 million – only about half as much – which often signals the end of a series. Yet the hype surrounding film adaptations of successful video games seems to be keeping this franchise alive.

Cast and Crew

John Rice, who previously directed "Angry Birds 2", is back behind the camera. His former co-director, Thurop Van Orman, is on board this time as a screenwriter and producer. Fans can also look forward to the return of the original voice actors: Jason Sudeikis, Josh Gad, Danny McBride, and Rachel Bloom are back. New additions to the cast include Emma Myers, Keke Palmer, Tim Robinson, and Lily James. YouTube stars Mr. Beast and Salish Matter are also set to lend their voices, though their roles have not yet been revealed.

The Angry Birds Phenomenon

What began in 2009 as a simple mobile game evolved into a global pop culture phenomenon within just a few years. "Angry Birds" was one of the first major mobile gaming successes and captivated millions of people with an incredibly simple gameplay concept: using a slingshot, players had to catapult the eponymous birds at the fortresses of the green pigs. The combination of easy-to-understand gameplay, quirky characters, and plenty of humor made the game an international hit. Numerous spin-offs, merchandise, and even its own animated series quickly followed.

It wasn't long before the franchise made the leap to the big screen. In 2016, "Angry Birds: The Movie" was released – the first cinematic adaptation, which told the backstory of the angry birds for the first time. The story centered on Red, a hot-tempered bird who, together with his unusual friends Chuck and Bombe, had to figure out what was going on with the pigs that suddenly appeared on his island. The film grossed more than $350 million worldwide, proving to be a commercial success.

This was followed in 2019 by the sequel, "Angry Birds 2: The Movie", in which the former arch-enemies had to join forces to face a new threat. Although the second installment didn't quite match its predecessor at the box office, the franchise continued to expand its fan base. In particular, the colorful animations, slapstick humor, and numerous references to the games made the films appealing to younger audiences as well.
