Following the global success of "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish", many fans are eagerly awaiting a new adventure featuring the beloved cat. Now there's a promising update from the directors of the acclaimed animated film.
In an interview with The Direct, Joel Crawford and Januel Mercado hinted that DreamWorks is apparently already working on a third installment of the popular animated series. Mercado let slip that, in his estimation, "things stirring in development". While this isn't an official confirmation, there are certainly signs that things are happening behind the scenes.
It's hardly surprising that DreamWorks might be interested in a sequel. "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" was a huge success, grossing around $480 million worldwide – on a budget of about $110 million. Many viewers and critics even called the film one of the strongest entries in the entire "Shrek" universe.
Likewise, Crawford and Mercado are interested not only in Puss himself but also in other characters from "The Last Wish". Goldilocks, voiced by Florence Pugh, and the bear family, in particular, could play important roles again in a future film. Crawford explained that when writing new stories, they would "always think bigger." So whether we'll actually get to see "Puss in Boots 3" one day remains to be seen. On June 30, 2027, we can look forward to a reunion with the lovable ogre in "Shrek 5".
Puss in Boots: The Success Story of the Most Charming Hero from the Shrek Universe
Hardly any other character from the "Shrek" universe has won over audiences' hearts as quickly as Puss in Boots. With his Spanish accent, oversized ego, and legendary puppy-dog eyes, the cat – voiced by Antonio Banderas – became one of the series' most beloved characters right after his first appearance in "Shrek 2". The Last Wish (2022): Surprisingly Profound
More than a decade later, Puss in Boots returned in "Puss in Boots: The Last Wish" – and surprised audiences and critics alike. Instead of a classic adventure film, the sequel tells a story about transience, fear, and the value of life.
At the beginning of the film, the cat learns that he has already used up eight of his nine lives. When he finally encounters Death personified in the form of a fearsome wolf, the otherwise fearless hero must realize that even legends are mortal. Together with Kitty Softpaws and the optimistic dog Perrito, he sets out in search of the Star of Wishes, which could restore his lost life.
The new animation style is particularly striking. DreamWorks clearly drew inspiration from modern works like "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" and combined 3D animation with stylized, almost painterly images. The result feels more dynamic and artistic than its predecessor.
In terms of content, the sequel goes far beyond what many would have expected from a family film. Topics such as panic attacks, self-doubt, and coming to terms with one's own mortality are handled with surprising sensitivity. At the same time, the film remains humorous and entertaining, appealing to children and adults alike.
Two Films, One Extraordinary Hero
While the first film works primarily as a charming adventure, "The Last Wish" is now considered by many to be a masterpiece of modern animation. The sequel received numerous awards and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Animated Feature.
