Here's everything you need to know about the return of the cult family

3 min reading time

Bart Simpson is a liar! Shortly after the first movie came out, Bart wrote on the famous school blackboard: "I will not wait 20 years to make another movie" And here we are: Two decades later, and the iconic yellow family is actually returning to the big screen! What do we know so far, and what does the first scene reveal? We'll bring you up to speed!

The Long Road to the Second Movie

Fans worldwide have been waiting for a sequel since 2007. The first movie was a box office hit back then: over $530 million in gross revenue on a budget of $75 million. Critics and audiences were also satisfied. So why has it taken so long to deliver a sequel? After all, Maggie already brought up the idea of a Part 2 at the end of the first movie!

The filmmakers have repeatedly emphasized just how extremely demanding the production of the first movie was – after all, it was produced alongside the ongoing TV series. Although there were often ideas for a second installment, development never really moved forward. At least not until September 2025: That's when 20th Century Studios and Disney finally officially announced that the second movie is in the works.

Title, Poster, and the Showdown with Minecraft

The announcement was accompanied by the first teaser poster. There wasn't much to see on it: a hand, a donut, and a tagline. Roughly translated: "Homer's coming back for seconds". In the meantime, there's also an official movie title: "The New Simpsons Movie".

There was a lot of buzz surrounding the release date: It was originally scheduled for July 23, 2027 – which would have been almost exactly the 20th anniversary of the first movie. However, the second "Minecraft" movie is also set to premiere on that date – which would have resulted in a massive "Simpscraft" showdown at the box office. But the yellow family managed to avoid that clash after all. The current release date for "The New Simpsons Movie" is September 3, 2027.

Pure chaos: First scenes revealed at D23

At Disney's big D23 event in August 2026, the filmmakers already showed the live audience exclusive, first-look footage. Although this consisted mainly of lightly animated storyboards, it already promises pure Simpsons chaos: The sequence begins at a baseball game where betting appears to play a role. Homer – and soon half the town – chases after a baseball in a panic. A completely wild chase ensues through all of Springfield. The whole thing culminates at the Duff Brewery, where Homer swims through a giant beer tank, only to be shot back to the stadium along with the ball at the end.

The Story: Could This Be the End of The Simpsons?

While this clip doesn't reveal much about the film's plot, the direction is clear: The creators are taking typical gags from the series and blowing them up on a massive scale for the big screen. It's all about massive, screen-filling chaos that simply can't be captured on TV.
Speaking of the series: "The Simpsons" has currently been renewed through Season 40. And according to a recent interview, Bart's voice actress, Nancy Cartwright, suspects that after that, it might finally be over. So the new movie could be a grand finale for the cult series, which these days no longer holds the same significance it did 20 years ago. Or it could be the final nail in the coffin – we'll see.

Either way, we can't wait to be back in the theater and see the crazy world of Springfield on the big screen once again. A 20-year wait is quite a statement, but if anyone can pull off a comeback like this, it's Homer and his family!
