The legendary cat-and-mouse duo are back: a new "Tom and Jerry" film is in the works!

According to Deadline, Oscar-winning screenwriters Rashida Jones, Will McCormack and Michael Govier have been entrusted by Warner Bros. Pictures Animation with the task of reinterpreting the eternal battle between Tom the cat and Jerry the mouse.

The story of Tom and Jerry began in 1940 at MGM Studios under the direction of William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. The 114 short films made until the closure of the MGM animation division were awarded seven Oscars. A hybrid "feature-length film" was also released in 2021, although it fell short of fans' expectations.

Although the series has been criticized over the years for its sometimes violent scenes, it has inspired generations of viewers and influenced other animated series such as "The Simpsons". The start date for the new movie is not yet known.

The legacy of Tom and Jerry: a timeless classic

Tom and Jerry, the cat and the mouse, have been an integral part of pop culture for over 80 years. Their slapstick adventures have delighted generations of viewers and won seven Oscars. But what makes this animated series so timeless?

The appeal of the eternal conflict

The appeal of Tom and Jerry lies in the universality of their conflict. The cat's hunt for the mouse is an archetypal theme that transcends cultural boundaries. Everyone can identify with the struggle between the clumsy hunter and his cunning prey.

Non-verbal comedy for an international audience

Tom and Jerry communicate almost exclusively non-verbally. The series relies on slapstick, visual gags and expressive music to tell the story. This non-verbal comedy makes the series internationally understandable and contributes to its worldwide success.

A reflection of society

Tom and Jerry is not only a humorous game of cat and mouse, but also a reflection of society. The series has adapted to socio-political changes over the years. One example of this is the replacement of the black housekeeper Mammy Two-Shoes with a white housewife in the 1960s. The series was also criticized for its violent scenes and racist stereotypes. In recent years, many episodes have been edited to remove offensive content. However, these edits are controversial as they alter the original works.

New generations, new interpretations

Tom and Jerry are constantly being reinterpreted and adapted. In addition to the classic short films, there are TV series, feature films and comics. In 2021, a new hybrid film was released that places the characters in a live-action environment. Tom and Jerry have left a lasting impact on animation history and pop culture. Today, Tom and Jerry continue to inspire new generations of viewers and prove that the battle between cat and mouse is timeless.
