Kingdom Hearts: Disney Confirms New Anime Series for Disney+
A completely new story is to be told
After years of speculation and rumors, it's now official: "Kingdom Hearts" is getting a new series adaptation for Disney+. The announcement was made during the D23 event in Anaheim.
However, the anime series isn't intended to simply retell the storylines of the previous games. Instead, Disney and Square Enix are focusing on a new story that expands the "Kingdom Hearts" universe while putting the characters front and center. To do full justice to the popular video game series, Disney says the project is being developed in close creative collaboration with Tetsuya Nomura, the creator of the "Kingdom Hearts" series.
Disney Kids & Family President Ayo Davis explained during the project's unveiling that "Kingdom Hearts" has captivated players around the world with an extraordinary blend of adventure, fantasy, and emotional storytelling. It is precisely these qualities that they now aim to bring to life in a new form. Although an official release date has not yet been announced, a 2027 release seems quite realistic. When "Kingdom Hearts" first came out for the PlayStation 2 in 2002, many thought the idea was absurd: Disney characters like Donald Duck, Goofy, and Mickey Mouse were set to appear alongside characters from the Final Fantasy series in an action role-playing game. An action RPG with a unique combat system
A key reason for the success of "Kingdom Hearts" is its gameplay. The series combines classic role-playing elements with fast-paced, real-time action combat. Sora wields the Keyblade, a magical weapon that takes on numerous forms and variations. In addition to standard attacks, the game features spells, special abilities, and spectacular combo attacks.
