Spider-Man: Is Sadie Sink Jean Grey in Brand New Day? Here's what Tom Holland has to say
Her role in the new Marvel movie has long been the subject of speculation
Fans have been wondering about this for quite some time: Will Sadie Sink appear as Jean Grey in "Spider-Man: Brand New Day"? Now, in an interview with Natalia Kreuser, Tom Holland was asked about the popular character from the "X-Men" comics. The actor who plays Peter Parker, aka Spider-Man, didn't reveal who Sink will play in the movie. But when asked about Jean Grey, he said:
"She's not in this movie, but it would be pretty cool."
That sounds clear enough. But does that finally put the rumor to rest? Hardly. It's quite possible that Tom Holland is right. But it's just as likely that he's leading us down the wrong path. Because one thing is clear: Marvel is keeping Sadie Sink's role such a closely guarded secret that the cast members probably aren't allowed to officially comment on whether she's playing Jean Grey or someone else after all.
Brand New Day: Rumors about Jean Grey's alleged role show no signs of ending
Ever since it was announced that "Stranger Things" star Sadie Sink is on board for "Spider-Man: Brand New Day," there has been speculation about her character. Many continue to suspect that the actress will be playing Jean Grey. The mutant with telekinetic and telepathic powers has been a member of the X-Men in the comics from the very beginning. As Marvel Girl, she fought alongside Cyclops, Beast, Angel, and Iceman against evil. Years later, she became an overwhelming threat as the Dark Phoenix – as seen in the movies "X-Men: The Last Stand" (played by Famke Janssen) and "Dark Phoenix" (Sophie Turner).
The rumors were further fueled by the first "Brand New Day" trailer, which was released a few months ago. Although Sadie Sink's face isn't visible in it, there was speculation that she appears in the trailer. It was speculated that the mysterious hooded figure is Sadie Sink in the role of Jean Grey. This is especially likely given that, immediately before that scene, someone is seen mentally taking control of other people right before Spider-Man's eyes – which would correspond to Jean Grey's telepathic powers. Perhaps it's even an early hint at her transformation into Dark Phoenix. Many seem to assume that this could lay the groundwork for the X-Men mutants to play a central role in the future phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Either way, at this point, it's still just speculation.
Sadie Sink's tongue-in-cheek explanation
The filmmakers are surely delighted by the fans' speculation. After all, it only serves to further fuel the excitement – especially since the whole thing is being deliberately marketed as a major mystery. Even shortly before the movie's release, there's still absolutely no hint as to who Sink might actually be playing in the film. The actress has since started having some fun with this herself – ultimately as part of the promotional campaign. In a playful social media clip for "Brand New Day," she announced: "Hi, my name is Sadie Sink and I play…" What follows is a long beep, which, of course, makes it impossible to tell what she's supposedly revealing.
In another clip, no less tongue-in-cheek, Sink announced that she can confirm three exclusive details about her character:
"I can confirm I am not Spider-Man. Second, I can confirm I am not Aunt May. And third, I can definitely confirm that I am in this movie. As for who I really am, you'll have to find out in the theater."
And that last sentence pretty much says it all. By the time the movie hits theaters at the latest, the world will finally find out who Sadie Sink will be playing in the new Spidey adventure. The good news: We won't have to wait much longer. "Spider-Man: Brand New Day" hits theaters on July 31, 2026. One thing is already clear: As the title suggests, "Brand New Day" marks the beginning of a completely new chapter in Peter Parker's life. That's because the people around him have forgotten that he even exists – even those who are closest to his heart. To get in the mood, you can watch the latest trailer here:
