It's all happening so fast: Although a concrete release date for the second season of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" is still a long time coming, pre-production for season 3 is already imminent.

The Hollywood Reporter has learned that Patrick McKay and JD Payne, the showrunners of "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power", have recently signed a new three-year contract with Amazon MGM Studios. This is a promising sign for the future of the fantasy series, as the two have already enjoyed enormous success with their first season. The contract not only allows for the continuation of their collaboration with Amazon MGM, but also includes the establishment of their own production company called "10:40 PM Productions". Not only does this underline the trust placed in their creative abilities, it also shows their commitment to the further development of high-quality content.

The first season of the series was released on Prime Video in the fall of 2022. Although it was met with rather mixed reactions from viewers, it established itself as Amazon's most-watched original series within a few weeks and was also nominated for 6 Emmys. Season 2 has already been shot and is scheduled for release in the second half of 2024 - but there is no specific date as of yet. Season 3, on the other hand, is still a long way off. Nevertheless, the showrunners have already started to further develop the original story arc.

Another significant project is the planned relocation of the production site from Bray Studios to Shepperton Studios in the UK. This decision highlights Amazon's continued investment in the series as well as the global significance of the production.
