A film adaptation of "Magic: The Gathering" is in the works. Maya Hawke is now set to be the first star of the planned movie, according to Deadline. It is not yet known what role the "Stranger Things" actress will play in the live-action adaptation of the fantasy card game of the same name. However, according to sources cited by Deadline, it is likely to be a key role – though it is also speculated that "Magic: The Gathering" will be an ensemble film.

A director has already been confirmed: Matt Johnson will helm the project. He is also set to co-write the screenplay for the "Magic: The Gathering" adaptation alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. We'll have to wait for further details on the film's cast and a release date. In any case, the source material is an enormously popular card game that first appeared in 1993 and became a success story that has won over millions of players worldwide. The impact of the card game is also evident in the fact that "Magic: The Gathering" was even inducted into the Science Fiction and Fantasy Hall of Fame a few years ago.

Known for Stranger Things

With Maya Hawke, the makers of the "Magic: The Gathering" film adaptation would be securing an actress who is increasingly making a name for herself through her roles. As the saying goes, the 28-year-old was born to act. After all, she is the daughter of two Hollywood stars who have made a name for themselves as top-tier actors: "Kill Bill" star Uma Thurman and Ethan Hawke, who is currently appearing in the second season of the acclaimed series "The Lowdown." Most viewers are likely to know Maya Hawke from the hit Netflix horror series "Stranger Things." In the role of Robin Buckley, she portrayed a character who joined the ensemble in the third season and gradually gained prominence.

The series concluded at the end of 2025 with its fifth and final season. It was likely an emotional farewell not only for the fans but also for Hawke and the other cast members of the long-running series. Speaking to Entertainment Tonight about filming the final season of "Stranger Things," she said: "It's already starting to be heartbreaking, you know? I mean, it's the end of a really long journey." Referring to her co-stars who had been with the show even longer than Hawke, she added:

"But as a late addition cast member, I feel like it's my job to be here to facilitate their feelings and just be grateful and excited to have been a part of it at all."

Soon in Sunrise on the Reaping

In addition to her famous role on the series "Stranger Things," Hawke has also made a name for herself in films. Particularly prestigious: "Asteroid City" by director Wes Anderson, who is known, among other things, for his star-studded casts. And his idiosyncratic blend of science fiction, comedy, and drama was teeming with stars, so that Hawke appeared alongside renowned actors such as Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Liev Schreiber, Steve Carell, and Margot Robbie.

With her role in "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," she has landed a part in a major film franchise. The movie series centers on the so-called Hunger Games of a fictional dictatorship, in which the selected teenage participants must fight each other until only one survivor remains. "Sunrise on the Reaping" is a prequel set 24 years before the events of the first film. In it, Hawke plays Wiress, a former Hunger Games winner who now serves as a mentor to other participants. Although the character isn't the film's central focus, she is certainly significant to the story and gives Hawke the opportunity to showcase her acting talent in a high-profile blockbuster.

You'll soon be able to see for yourself: The film hits theaters on November 20, 2026. To get in the mood, you can watch the trailer for "Sunrise on the Reaping" here:
