What Happens at Night: Superstar Charli xcx Joins the Cast of the New Martin Scorsese Film
A number of other projects are also in the planning stages
A high-profile addition to the cast of "What Happens at Night": As reported by the industry magazine Variety, superstar Charlie XCX will star alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence in Martin Scorsese's new film. For the singer, "What Happens at Night" is by no means her first foray into the film industry. The three-time Grammy winner has recently given her acting career a significant boost and has appeared in several film productions within the span of two years.
Among her best-known projects is "The Moment", a mockumentary by director Aidan Zamiri in which she pokes fun at her own success surrounding the album "Brat". She has also worked with Scorsese before. The filmmaker appears on the cover of her latest album, "Music, Fashion, Film". However, it is not yet known what role Charli XCX will play in "What Happens At Night".
A first look at DiCaprio and Lawrence
Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence will play the two lead roles. The cast also includes Mads Mikkelsen and Jared Harris, known for his roles in "Chernobyl" and "Foundation". Also joining the cast is Patricia Clarkson, who appeared in Scorsese's "Shutter Island", among other films. An initial photo of DiCaprio and Lawrence in their roles was released earlier this year.
"What Happens At Night" is based on the novel of the same name by Peter Cameron. The story centers on an American couple who travel to a snow-covered small town in Europe. There, the two plan to adopt a baby and initially check into a hotel. But the planned adoption is delayed. While the couple waits for the child, they encounter a series of unusual and sometimes enigmatic characters at the hotel. With each passing day, the situation seems to grow increasingly surreal. Their deep desire for a child together ultimately becomes a test of their relationship, while their familiar reality begins to crumble more and more.
Other Planned Projects by Martin Scorsese
In recent years, Scorsese has announced a whole range of new films. One is "The Life of Jesus", based on a novel by Shūsaku Endō. Second, a biopic about the legendary singer Frank Sinatra. However, as Variety has learned from sources, both films have been postponed indefinitely. In early 2023, KinoCheck reported that a film adaptation of the acclaimed novel "The Wager" by author David Grann was also in the works.
"The Wager" – subtitled "A Tale of Shipwreck, Mutiny, and Murder" – is based on true events and tells the story of a group of men who wash ashore on the coast of Brazil. They claim to be the sole survivors of the British ship "Wager" and say they were shipwrecked on a deserted island after a battle with a Spanish galleon. The members of the group are initially hailed as heroes, but about six months later, other men arrive who accuse them of mutiny and of abandoning the rest of the crew to their deaths. The film was supposed to take place in three locations: at sea, on the island, and in a courtroom. Leonardo DiCaprio was set to play the lead role. But this project, too, vanished from the scene. When – or if – we'll ever get to see "The Wager" remains to be seen.
In addition, according to Deadline, an untitled gangster drama starring DiCaprio, Dwayne Johnson, and Emily Blunt is also in the works. The story centers on an up-and-coming mob boss who engages in bitter conflicts with rival criminal gangs. His goal: to eliminate the competition and seize control of Hawaii's underworld. No release date has been set.
