The first reactions to "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping" are in. The reviews so far for the prequel to the dystopian "Hunger Games" series are quite clear: the feedback from critics who have already seen the film has been overwhelmingly positive.

At the heart of the movie franchise are the so-called Hunger Games of a fictional dictatorship, in which the selected adolescent participants must fight each other until only one survivor remains. The upcoming prequel, "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping," centers on the young Haymitch Abernathy, who is chosen for the Hunger Games 24 years before the events of the first film. In the first "Hunger Games" films, released between 2012 and 2015, the character was portrayed by Woody Harrelson. The younger version in "Sunrise on the Reaping" is played by Joseph Zada.

We'll find out how the new prequel by director Francis Lawrence is generally received once the in-depth reviews are published. However, the initial reactions posted by critics on social media already give us a first impression of how the film is being evaluated.

What critics are saying about Sunrise on the Reaping

Some of the reactions so far read as downright euphoric. One aspect that keeps coming up as particularly positive is Joseph Zada's performance as Haymitch Abernathy. Nina Starner also emphasizes this, writing:

"The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping is a worthy addition to the franchise. Casting is phenomenal (Joseph Zada couldn't be better), it looks and feels terrifyingly real."

Griffin Schiller is also enthusiastic, comparing "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping" to two acclaimed works from the "Star Wars" universe: the prequel film "Rogue One" and its TV spin-off "Andor":

"#TheHungerGames Sunrise on the Reaping is the Rogue One/Andor of the franchise. A sobering, yet powerful story of devastating loss and the necessary cost of rebellion for a sunrise we may never see. [...] Joseph Zada is a revelation. Completely floored by his performance. So charismatic, lovable, tender, and honest; he perfectly captures Haymitch's love of people, pain, and rebellious spirit."

Lauren LaMagna also can't resist praising Joseph Zada's performance. And about the director she says:

"Francis Lawrence continues to breathe new life into this world. The unique production design doesn't let familiar beats get too dull."

Director Francis Lawrence's work is also singled out by Matt Neglia:

"I'm continually blown away by how Francis Lawrence continues to find more layers in this familiar structure thematically and stylistically as the production and costume design continue to be dazzling highlights. If this is to be the end of his time working on these movies, it's a good way to go out as this latest installment brings the franchise full circle with the character that's always been the beating heart at its center."

Jennifer Lawrence's return as Katniss Everdeen

Given such positive reactions, fans' expectations are likely to grow even higher. Especially since they can also look forward to the return of some familiar faces in "Sunrise on the Reaping." As reported by KinoCheck, Jennifer Lawrence will also appear in the new film. The actress has now confirmed her return as Katniss Everdeen on the "Call Her Daddy" podcast. In the first four films of the "Hunger Games" series, Katniss – played by Lawrence – was at the center of the plot. And she isn't the only star from the first films making a comeback in the new prequel. We'll also see Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark and Woody Harrelson as Haymitch Abernathy.

The theatrical release of "The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping" is fast approaching: Starting November 20, 2026, you'll be able to see for yourself whether the film is as compelling as the early reviews suggest.
