Aegon's Conquest: Release Date Announced for the Game of Thrones Movie
A number of other "Game of Thrones" projects are also in the works
"Game of Thrones" fans have reason to celebrate! "Aegon's Conquest" will be the first feature film based on George R.R. Martin's popular fantasy universe. Variety has now announced the release date for the blockbuster. The movie is set to hit theaters on June 6, 2029. Owen Harris, who is already very familiar with the "Game of Thrones" universe, will direct. Among other things, he was responsible for several episodes of the spin-off series "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms". The screenplay is by Beau Willimon, who is best known as the showrunner for the political series "House of Cards". Willimon also served as a writer on "Andor".
What Aegon's Conquest Is About
As the title suggests, the film will focus on Aegon I Targaryen. Centuries before the events of "Game of Thrones", he began his conquest of Westeros, thereby laying the foundation for the Targaryen dynasty. Aegon marched on Westeros alongside his sisters and wives, Visenya and Rhaenys, as well as his dragons. Through military force, he ultimately succeeded in uniting large parts of the continent under his rule. He also created the iconic Iron Throne.
Aegon himself has not yet appeared in any "Game of Thrones" production. It is also not yet known who will portray the legendary ruler in the upcoming movie. Among fans, however, there is one clear favorite: Henry Cavill! We'll definitely keep you posted!
More Projects from the World of Game of Thrones
House of the Dragon Season 4
The final episode of the third season of "House of the Dragon" premiered just this past August. The fourth and final season of the prequel, however, is set to premiere on HBO Max in 2028. In terms of plot, the grand finale will focus entirely on the end of the civil war. The conflict between Rhaenyra Targaryen and her opponents over the Iron Throne has already shaken Westeros to its core, but the decisive battles are yet to come.
While official casting news is still pending, it's all but certain that the central characters from the current cast will return for the finale. These include, of course, Emma D'Arcy as Rhaenyra Targaryen, Matt Smith as Daemon Targaryen, Olivia Cooke as Alicent High Tower, and Steve Toussaint as Lord Corlys.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2
The second season of "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is set to premiere as early as 2027. The series once again centers on the Hedge Knight Dunk and his young squire Egg, whose adventures take place several decades before the events of "Game of Thrones". The series is based on the popular stories by George R. R. Martin and focuses more on classic adventures than on the great war for the Iron Throne.
The Animated Series 9 Voyages
Another exciting project is the planned animated series "9 Voyages", which will center on Lord Corlys Velaryon, also known as the Sea Snake. Fans of "House of the Dragon" are already familiar with the character from the live-action series, where he is portrayed by Steve Toussaint. "9 Voyages" tells the story of Corlys' legendary sea voyages, his expeditions to distant lands, and his rise to become one of the richest and most powerful men in the history of Westeros.
Genndy Tartakovsky is set to direct; he has earned an outstanding reputation in the animation industry with projects such as "Star Wars: The Clone Wars" and "Primal". The project was originally planned as a high-budget live-action series. Bruno Heller, who previously created series such as "Rome" and "Gotham", was behind the project.
However, George R. R. Martin confirmed that the concept had to be revised for financial reasons. The exotic locations, massive ships, and spectacular naval battles would have made a live-action adaptation extremely costly. That's why HBO ultimately opted for an animated adaptation, which offers significantly more creative freedom. An official release date for "9 Voyages" has not yet been announced.
