House of the Dragon season 3: The most intense battle ever is set to take place in episode 1
With the Battle of the Gullet, the HBO series has set a world record
The premiere of the third season of "House of the Dragon" is just around the corner. The new episodes of the "Game of Thrones" prequel will begin airing on June 21, 2026, on HBO. Here's what you can look forward to: The first episode will feature a clash of epic proportions: the "Battle of the Gullet." If showrunner Ryan Condal is to be believed, it could be the most intense battle ever seen in the "Game of Thrones" universe.
At the "House of the Dragon" panel at SXSW London, Condal went even further. As The Hollywood Reporter reports, he proudly announced there:
"These sequences, I will confidently say, are unlike anything that's ever been done on television before."

House of the Dragon: Season 3 sets a world record
At first, that sounds like a bold claim. But the creators of "House of the Dragon" also let impressive numbers speak for themselves. A teaser reel played at SXSW London that underscores just how massive the third season of the fantasy series is set to be. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the teaser mentions "15,000 stunt crowds," "3,500 props," and "25 tons of propane." On top of that, another number stood out, flashing across an image of a massive warship exploding: "23 stunt performers ignited in one take – a new world record!"
Given this, the third season of "House of the Dragon" does indeed seem set to begin with a massive spectacle – which is also necessary if the show is to do justice to George R. R. Martin's source material. For as connoisseurs of Martin's source material "Fire & Blood" know: In the world of "Game of Thrones," the "Battle of the Gullet" is considered one of the bloodiest naval battles in history. A credible adaptation demands a correspondingly elaborate production. Condal, who wrote the script for the season 3 premiere, emphasized this as well, saying with a wink:
"The amount of construction that you guys did for just the one episode is kind of crazy and frankly irresponsible."
To which the showrunner of "House of the Dragon" added:
"But it was necessary to tell the story, and this is such a seminal moment for the show."

House of the Dragon isn't the only spin-off
Created by Ryan Condal and George R. R. Martin, "House of the Dragon" takes place about 200 years before the events of "Game of Thrones." The series centers on the bloody war within House Targaryen. The series premiered in 2022. The second season followed about two years later. The upcoming third season will consist of eight episodes in total. A final, fourth season is set to conclude "House of the Dragon" at a later date. Over the course of the previous seasons, the series has featured a remarkable cast, including Emma D'Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Matt Smith, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Sonoya Mizuno, Fabien Frankel, Emily Carey, Graham McTavish, Matthew Needham, Jefferson Hall, Harry Collett, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Milly Alcock, and Paddy Considine.
In addition to "House of the Dragon," "Game of Thrones" fans can look forward to the continuation of another spin-off. "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms" is also a prequel to the fantasy hit, based on George R. R. Martin's "Tales of Dunk and Egg." The lead roles are played by Peter Claffey Dexter and Sol Ansell. The series, created by Martin and showrunner Ira Parker, premiered in January of this year. A second season has already been greenlit.
