X-Men: Asa Germann is set to play Angel
The Gen V star initially had his sights set on a different Marvel character
New cast member for "X-Men": Asa Germann is set to play the superhero Angel in the new Marvel film. Initially, he was reportedly one of the candidates for the role of Cyclops. However, as has since been revealed, Kit Connor will take on the part. Meanwhile, Germann was apparently offered the role of Angel instead. Marvel has not yet commented on this. However, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Germann is reportedly in final talks for the role.
As Angel, aka Warren Worthington III, he would portray one of the original "X-Men" members. The mutant with angelic wings – which are replaced by metallic wings in later stories – made his debut in Marvel comics as early as 1963. This makes him part of the "X-Men" universe from the very beginning, alongside Charles Xavier (aka Professor X), Scott Summers (aka Cyclops), Jean Grey (aka Marvel Girl), Hank McCoy (aka Beast), and Bobby Drake (aka Iceman). Angel has already appeared on the big screen in previous film adaptations. In "X-Men: The Last Stand," he was played by Ben Foster, and in "X-Men: Apocalypse," by Ben Hardy.
Asa Germann is known, among other things, for his role in the horror film "Scream 7." Many viewers are likely to remember him most for his role in the "Boys" spin-off "Gen V." In the superhero series, he played a central character, Sam Riordan. It's not without a certain irony that he's now set to play a role in "X-Men". After all, "Gen V" is, to a certain extent, a kind of dark take on the Marvel mutants. The X-Men's founder, Professor X, wants to make the world a better place with the help of the young heroes. In contrast, the young protagonists in "Gen V" are trained at the shady Godolkin University, an institution that recruits students with superpowers for its own specific purposes. A few months ago, "Gen V" was canceled after its second season. However, should Germann reach an agreement with Marvel, he'll remain part of the superhero genre.
X-Men: Several cast members confirmed
Several "X-Men" cast members were officially confirmed a few weeks ago. As previously mentioned, we'll see Kit Connor as Cyclops, aka Scott Summers. The mutant with the deadly eyes plays a central role in numerous comics and consistently appears as the leader of the eponymous superhero team. Samara Weaving plays Emma Frost, also known as the White Queen. Frost possesses telepathic powers and can transform her body into an organic diamond form. Although she was initially an antagonist of the X-Men, she later switched sides. "Star Wars" actor Adam Driver has been cast in the role of Mr. Sinister. In the comics, this villain takes a particular interest in Cyclops and Jean Grey: he is convinced that he can use their DNA to create the ultimate mutant.
With Inde Navarette, the "X-Men" film has secured an actress who recently caused a sensation with the horror hit "Obsession." She will take on the role of Rogue: the mutant who can absorb the energy of others through touch. The actor playing the X-Men's founder, Professor X, has also been confirmed: Christopher Abbott will take on the role of the powerful telepath. Maya Boyd will play the superheroine Storm, also known as Ororo Munroe. The mutant has the ability to control the weather and use it to her advantage in battle against her opponents.
Back to the roots
The world of the "X-Men" offers a vast array of characters. Accordingly, fans are likely to be particularly interested to learn that Angel, another original member, is now set to join the ensemble. It's already been confirmed that Professor X, Cyclops, and Jean Grey will be part of the superhero team. There have also been repeated rumors about the casting of Beast. If Marvel is also interested in including Iceman in the new film, the original lineup from the comics would be complete. The plot of the new film is not yet known. However, such a lineup would suggest that the film tells an origin story that, at least in part, ties back to the roots of the "X-Men" universe.
For now, though, this is all just speculation. It remains to be seen what the film will ultimately be about. One thing is certain: Jake Schreier is directing, having previously gained experience in the Marvel Cinematic Universe with "Thunderbolts." Lee Sung Jin and Joanna Calo are on board as screenwriters; like Schreier, they were also involved in "Thunderbolts." The release date has also been set: "X-Men" hits theaters on May 5, 2028.
