Equally compelling is "The Ritual", in which a hiking trip in Scandinavia spirals completely out of control. The monster design and the oppressive forest atmosphere alone make it worth watching.
If you like your movies truly uncompromising, you can't miss "Apostle". In the film, Dan Stevens travels to a remote island in 1905 to rescue his sister from the clutches of a fanatical cult. What begins as a dark thriller escalates into an incredibly brutal folk horror nightmare that is utterly captivating, both visually and atmospherically.
If you haven't seen "Smile 2" yet: It's high time! The sequel stands wonderfully on its own and consistently builds on the concept of the smile curse. This time, it's a pop star on a world tour who's targeted – the constant pressure of the public eye blends perfectly with the visual terror of paranoia and tweaks all the right elements to deliver some serious chills. The sequel "28 Years Later: The Bone Temple" is far more controversial. Director Nia DaCosta pits a mysterious cult in post-apocalyptic England against the rampaging infected. Amazon Prime Video: Sophisticated Horror

The film follows a deeply religious nurse whose care for a patient with cancer turns into a dangerous, delusional obsession. After a seemingly perfect blind date, a young woman's charming date turns into a sadistic monster and chases her through the streets of Los Angeles at night. Those who prefer less spectacle and, above all, revel in a dark atmosphere should check out the "Suspiria" remake. Set in the cold Berlin of the 1970s, a famous dance academy is run by a coven of witches that transforms dance movements into deadly magic – an intoxicating, unsettling work of art full of hypnotic imagery.
Hulu: Hidden Gems and the Return of a Legend
Hulu has long been more than just family entertainment. It's home to some hidden gems that far too few people saw in theaters. No less fascinating is "Heretic". A psychological chamber drama carried by its outstanding dialogue and a fantastic lead cast – most notably Hugh Grant in a role completely out of character for him. When two young missionaries knock on his door, they find themselves caught in a complexly constructed death trap.
And for anyone looking for a refreshingly new concept: "Late Night with the Devil" is a must-see. This simulated '70s late-night show, in which a demon exorcism goes haywire live on TV, is one of the most unsettling horror films of recent years – not for the faint of heart!
The absolute highlight on Hulu right now, however, is Sam Raimi's new film: "Send Help". After a plane crash, an employee and her unbearable boss are stranded on a deserted island. What begins as a survival drama quickly turns into a dark, extremely suspenseful horror trip. Raimi demonstrates once again why he is an absolute master of the genre.
