"Obsession" director Curry Barker has made a new horror film called "Mama Bear." And the best part: You can already watch the entire short film on YouTube. Barker directed, wrote, and edited the film, and released it on the YouTube channel "that's a bad idea," which he has been running for years with Cooper Tomlinson. The cast includes Jon Lee Richardson, Katie Sarife, Ericka Kreuz, and Joshua Snyder.

The timing for Barker's first film since his massive horror hit "Obsession" couldn't be better. After all, the eerie, roughly five-minute-long short film is being released just before Halloween. But what is "Mama Bear" about? At the center of this horror story is a young man named Floyd (played by Jon Lee Richardson). He's sleeping on the couch when he's woken up by a phone call. The man on the other end of the line is completely distraught. With urgent words, he tries to warn Floyd and urges him to leave the house. Floyd can't make sense of the caller's cryptic statements and grows increasingly nervous. Suddenly, the call ends abruptly – and the real nightmare begins.

We won't spoil what happens next here. Suffice it to say: "Mama Bear" tells the story of a situation that's as absurd as it is menacing—and one that grows increasingly strange. A Kafkaesque short film that you can watch here:

Curry Barker: Success with Obsession

Thanks to "Obsession," Curry Barker was the talk of the town this year. With his horror film, the director – who got his start on YouTube – landed a massive hit that filled movie theaters with a worldwide box office take of $525 million. And yet the production budget was a mere $750,000. Currently, "Obsession" ranks 10th among the most successful films of the year so far. Even Barker hadn't expected the film to take off like this. When asked about the astonishing success, he said some time ago in an interview with the industry magazine The Hollywood Reporter:

"When it made $27 million, I couldn't believe it. [...] It became a word-of-mouth movie. I started going to the theater to sneak in and watch the film too because I wanted to be part of this thing."

But it's not just the box office results that are impressive. Critics are also won over by "Obsession". The performance of lead actress Inde Navarrette also played a major role in the horror film's success. "Obsession" tells the story of a young man whose wish is granted by a supernatural toy: the woman of his dreams falls madly in love with him – with devastating consequences. According to many critics, Navarette plays this "dream woman" so convincingly that she's even considered a potential Oscar contender. In any case, her career has really taken off since "Obsession." Among other things, she landed a role in the upcoming "X-Men" movie. In the Marvel blockbuster, she will portray Rogue – a mutant who can absorb the energy of others through touch.

New film by Curry Barker coming to theaters in 2027

Barker's next directorial project is "Anything but Ghosts." The filmmaker co-wrote the screenplay with Cooper Tomlinson and will star alongside his co-writer. The cast also includes Aaron Paul, Bryce Dallas Howard, and Violet McGraw. The film centers on con artists who pose as ghost hunters – and one day enter a real haunted house. The release date has already been set: "Anything but Ghosts" hits theaters on May 7, 2027.
