Fans of the hit series "Squid Game" have reason to rejoice, because the second season is finally starting in December! But that's not all: a new spin-off series by David Fincher is currently being planned.

According to exclusive reports from Deadline, this will be the first English-language adaptation of the "Squid Game" universe. Insiders also report that the acclaimed director will dedicate himself to the project in early 2025. However, it is also possible that another film will be released first. Fincher, who has had a contract with Netflix for some time and was also responsible for the thriller series "Mindhunter", was previously linked to a "Squid Game" film. However, it is now clear that it is a series instead.

More detailed information about the plot of the series is not yet known. However, the spin-off will be set in the USA and will therefore differ from the original South Korean version. Dennis Kelly, who already proved with his series "Utopia" that he has a knack for dark stories, will be responsible for the screenplay. It remains to be seen whether the series will ultimately be made. Netflix has not yet issued a statement.

David Fincher's best-known films at a glance

David Fincher is a master of modern cinema whose works fascinate audiences and critics alike. With his meticulous attention to detail and a penchant for gloomy atmospheres, he has developed an unmistakable trademark. The director is known for psychological thrillers and his ability to portray complex characters and social issues. Fincher's career spans several decades and includes some of the most influential films in recent cinematic history. Here are some of his most significant works that illustrate not only his talent, but also his influence on modern cinema.

"Se7en" (1995)

One of the films that catapulted Fincher to the top of the thriller genre is "Se7en". The gritty crime thriller tells the story of two detectives, played by Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman, who are on the trail of a serial killer who orchestrates his murders according to the seven deadly sins. "Se7en" is an impressive example of Fincher's ability to build suspense and transport the audience into a dark world. The detailed visual design, especially the lighting and color palette, enhances the oppressive atmosphere. The unexpected and shocking ending has made the film a classic that is repeatedly cited as a model for the thriller genre.

"Fight Club" (1999)

Four years after "Seven", Fincher delivered another cult film: "Fight Club". Based on Chuck Palahniuk's novel, this film is a radical and often controversial examination of topics such as consumer society, masculinity and identity. Brad Pitt and Edward Norton star in this story about an unhappy office worker who feels alienated from society and lives in an anonymous city. When he meets the charismatic Tyler Durden (Pitt), he founds the titular Fight Club with him, an underground organization that offers men the opportunity to express their frustration through violence. The visual design, the rebellious tone and the surprising twist in the film have made "Fight Club" a classic that continues to fascinate and polarize new generations of viewers.

"Zodiac" (2007)

"Zodiac" is based on the true story of the infamous Zodiac Killer, who wreaked havoc in San Francisco in the 1960s and 70s and was never caught. The film is a detailed and thoroughly researched portrait of the men who spent years trying to identify the killer. Fincher deliberately avoids the lurid elements of a typical crime thriller in this work and instead focuses on the obsessions and psychological strain that the investigation causes those involved. With Jake Gyllenhaal, Mark Ruffalo and Robert Downey Jr. in the leading roles, "Zodiac" is an example of Fincher's attention to detail and his flair for atmospheric staging.

"The Social Network" (2010)

With "The Social Network", Fincher filmed the story of the creation of Facebook and the controversial conflicts associated with the founding of the social network. The screenplay by Aaron Sorkin is sharply and intelligently written and provides Fincher with an excellent basis for depicting the development of the social network and the personal struggles of the main characters. Jesse Eisenberg plays the role of Mark Zuckerberg, who is shown as a driven and often ruthless entrepreneur. The film received numerous awards and is considered a brilliant example of the combination of Fincher's direction and Sorkin's dialog-heavy screenwriting style. "The Social Network" was celebrated as a mirror of digital society and shows the dark side of fame, success and betrayal in Silicon Valley.

"Gone Girl" (2014)

In "Gone Girl", Fincher once again devotes himself to a psychologically complex thriller. The film is based on the bestseller of the same name by Gillian Flynn, who also wrote the screenplay for the film adaptation. The story revolves around the marriage of Nick (Ben Affleck) and Amy (Rosamund Pike) and takes a dark turn when Amy disappears without a trace and Nick becomes increasingly suspected of having murdered her. "Gone Girl" explores the theme of manipulation and the power of the media and shows how public perception can influence a person's life. The precise staging and dense atmosphere make Gone Girl one of the most exciting thrillers of the last decade.

"Mank" (2020)

With "Mank", Fincher ventured into a historical drama that deals with the creation of Citizen Kane and is told from the perspective of screenwriter Herman J. Mankiewicz. The film pays homage to old Hollywood and was shot in a visually appealing black and white style. Gary Oldman plays the role of the alcoholic but brilliant writer Mankiewicz, who is trying to finish the script for one of the greatest films of all time. "Mank" is also a personal story for Fincher, as his late father wrote the screenplay. The film received numerous Oscar nominations and shows Fincher's versatility and respect for film history.
