Polly Pocket: Mattel Movie Loses Its Director

The Barbie movie is partly to blame

by Tom Hartig on

First "Barbie", now "Polly Pocket": the next toy is made into a movie. But Mattel has now suffered a major setback: The director has backed out of the project!

The development of the project actually began in 2021, well before the huge success of Greta Gerwig's "Barbie" film. Lena Dunham, who had already won two Golden Globes for the "Girls" series, was already hired to direct at the time.

However, in an interview with The New Yorker, Dunham revealed that she would be dropping out of the "Polly Pocket" film adaptation. Discussions with colleagues such as Nany Meyers, Nore Ephron and Greta Gerwig were the decisive factor in her decision. She admires their ability to realize their own ideas in their films. Something that Dunham was apparently unable to do with the "Polly Pocket" movie. Quote:

"Unless I can do it that way, I'm not going to do it. I don't think I have that in me."
