For years, there has been speculation about the live-action adaptation of the classic anime, but now things are finally getting serious. A Fresh Take on the Sci-Fi Phenomenon
"Voltron" is based on the 1980s animated series of the same name, "Voltron: Defender of the Universe". The story centers on young space pilots who pilot gigantic machines shaped like lions. When things get tough against tyrannical threats, they can combine them into a massive mecha. The concept is, of course, strongly reminiscent of later titles like "Power Rangers" or Hollywood's "Pacific Rim". There have already been reboots of "Voltron", such as the Netflix series "Voltron: Legendary Defender".
According to an exclusive report by the website Feature First, the story of the live-action film goes as follows: After his mother's death, a teenager discovers that she was a legendary Voltron pilot from the planet Altea. When the tyrant Zarkon breaks out of captivity and launches a brutal attack on Altea, the boy must pilot her lion himself and reunite Team Voltron.
The Team Behind the Voltron Movie
Expectations for a live-action adaptation are high. But how do you bring this vast universe to life? Behind the camera, director Rawson Marshall Thurber is calling the shots; he's previously directed blockbusters like "Red Notice" and "Skyscraper". He's already made it unmistakably clear that the film will stay true to the source material. However, we'll be introduced to an entirely new generation of pilots in this movie.
Speaking of the cast: The biggest name in the "Voltron" movie is, of course, fan favorite Henry Cavill. There's no official word yet on who he'll be playing. According to "Feature First", however, he will play King Alfor – the brilliant creator of the Voltron lions. According to the same source, the villain Zarkon will be portrayed by Sterling K. Brown – known for his roles in the series "This Is Us" and "Paradise", among others.
The lead role, therefore, goes to newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye. Other names on the official cast list include singer and actress Rita Ora, as well as John Kim and Alba Baptista. Again, there's no official confirmation yet on which roles they'll take on. However, they would be well-suited to play the young fighter pilots around whom "Voltron" will once again revolve.
"Voltron" Won't Be Coming to Theaters
Filming was successfully completed in Australia back in May 2025. The film is currently in the intensive post-production phase to finalize the extremely complex visual effects. However, anyone hoping for thumping bass and the authentic popcorn-movie theater experience will have to brace themselves. As official sources confirmed in May 2026, it's now definitively clear: Amazon MGM won't be releasing the sci-fi blockbuster in theaters, but will instead release "Voltron" exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in 2027.
