Antony Starr is best known to audiences around the world for his role as Homelander in "The Boys". With the end of the superhero series approaching, the actor has already landed his next leading role. In the Netflix series "Breakers", Starr will play a charismatic surfer, as Deadline reports.

Not much else is known about the plot. All that has been confirmed is that two best friends from the USA are at the center of the story. The two travel to Australia together, where they soon encounter a seemingly perfect community of surfers. Their leader: the mysterious Brando, played by Antony Starr.

The Homelander actor will not only play the lead role in "Breakers", but will also be on board as one of the executive producers alongside screenwriter Pete Jackson. Mary Nighy and Ng Choon Ping are to direct. Clerkenwell Films, the production company that brought Netflix one of the most acclaimed mini-series of recent years with "Baby Reindeer" in 2024, is also involved. Production of "Breakers" has already begun in Australia and is due to be completed in June of this year.

Antony Starr's signature role: Homelander

Before we can admire Antony Starr's surfing skills on Netflix, he will first be seen in the fifth and final season of "The Boys". The series from showrunner Eric Kripke is based on the comic series of the same name by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson and is set in a world in which superheroes are part of everyday life and are celebrated as stars. Unlike the usual superhero stories, however, this one is less about the fight for good. Instead, the superpowers are used by many for personal purposes, if not mercilessly abused to gain self-importance. The real heroes in "The Boys" are not the supposed superheroes revered by the public, but those who oppose them. First and foremost a group of resistance fighters led by the moody Billy Butcher, played by Karl Urban.

Butcher's most threatening opponent is undoubtedly Homelander. The character played by Antony Starr is basically a supervillain in the guise of a superhero. A kind of megalomaniac, completely out-of-control alternative to the DC hero Superman. Both have very similar superpowers and tremendous charisma. In contrast to the good-natured hero from the planet Krypton, however, Homelander is a narcissistic, highly dangerous maniac.

For Antony Starr, Homelander became a signature role that made him famous worldwide. It also brought him numerous awards, including a Critics' Choice Super Award for Best Villain in a Series. And quite rightly so. Starr knows how to embody Homelander's madness to perfection. He makes him a larger-than-life villain, but plays him with such nuance that he doesn't degenerate into a caricature. Above all, however, he gives his character, especially in the first seasons of "The Boys", a tremendous unpredictability. Homelander is one of those villains where you're never quite sure what's coming next. At the same time, Starr makes him so menacing that you can always trust him to finish off Butcher and co.

The Boys: The end is near

The character of Homelander plays a key role in making "The Boys" a success. The fifth and final season of the series is set to start on Prime Video on April 8, 2026. Initially with two episodes, followed by six more, each of which will be released weekly. The grand finale will be shown on May 20. However, fans of "The Boys" can rest assured. The franchise will continue to exist. There is already a two-season spin-off, "Gen V", which is about a shady university where students with superpowers are trained. A third season has not yet been confirmed, but is considered likely.

Two further spin-offs are also planned. "Vought Rising" is a prequel set in the 1950s. In keeping with the title, "The Boys: Mexico" is set in Mexico City. It remains to be seen whether Antony Starr will also be in one of the future spin-offs. In any case, fans of the actor will be able to see how he does as a surfer after the end of "The Boys". And who knows: maybe he'll score the next big hit with "Breakers".
