Gosling is taking on the role of a decades-old comic book hero. He first appeared in August 1972 in issue #5 of the "Marvel Spotlight" series. The popular Marvel character is stunt rider Johnny Blaze, who makes a pact with the devil. This transforms him into the motorcycle-riding being with a flaming skull.
Gosling won't be the first to play the character on the big screen. Back in 2007, Nicolas Cage starred as Johnny Blaze, aka Ghost Rider, in a film directed and written by Mark Steven Johnson. Ghost Rider made a comeback years later in "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." In the Marvel TV series, Gabriel Luna portrayed Ghost Rider for several episodes, though he played Robbie Reyes, a different incarnation of the hero.
