Thomas is in an average marriage with Sabine (Veronica Ferres) and has the usual communication problems with his average, pubescent son Alexander (Jonas Nay). When he unexpectedly loses his job, his world comes crashing down. But then Thomas meets the charismatic Stefan Schmidt (Wanja Mues) , who promptly offers him a new job at Industries Unlimited. Surprisingly, all of a sudden, his opinion on everything and everyone is in high demand: from his favorite beer brand and music to the color of his tie and his political views. When Thomas becomes suspicious and discovers why he, of all people, has suddenly become so important, he tries—with the help of his son Alexander, Alexander's girlfriend Mira (Jella Haase) , and his secret love Ute (Katrin Bauerfeind) —to finally break free from mediocrity and rise above himself.
