"The Mandela Catalogue" is set to be the next YouTube horror hit to take the big screen by storm after making waves online. None other than Steven Spielberg has secured the rights to the material – together with Scott Stuber of United Artists and Amazon MGM Studios. According to Deadline, there was reportedly a fiercely contested 11-studio bidding war beforehand.

The project is based on the YouTube series "The Mandela Catalogue," which premiered in June 2021 and is set in the fictional Mandela County, Wisconsin. The town is haunted by the Alternates, shape-shifting creatures that assume the identities of their victims. The series is considered a prime example of "analog horror," a subgenre characterized, among other things, by an aesthetic reminiscent of analog footage from the late 20th century.

The creator of The Mandela Catalogue will direct the film

Steven Spielberg, who recently told a story of an invasion in his science-fiction thriller "Disclosure Day," will not be taking the director's chair for the film adaptation of "The Mandela Catalogue" but will serve as a producer. Instead, Alex Kister, the creator of the YouTube hit, will direct the planned film. Together with Tyler Clifton, he is also responsible for the screenplay. Kister and Clifton are also among the producers, along with Holly Bario, Aaron B. Koontz, Scott Stuber, and Nick Nesbitt. As for potential cast members, nothing has been announced yet. No details about the plot have been revealed either. A potential release date has not yet been announced – though it will likely be quite a while before the film is ready.

Horror hits from the internet are in extremely high demand in Hollywood

It's not all that surprising that the rights to the film adaptation are so highly sought after. The series became a hit on YouTube. According to Deadline, the official episodes of "The Mandela Catalogue" have racked up well over 100 million views. Furthermore, horror content like this – which became a hit online and brings a breath of fresh air to the genre – is all the rage. The best example is "Backrooms." The current box-office sensation also began as a YouTube web series. Its creator, Kane Parsons, took the director's chair himself for the film adaptation – and scored a huge hit. The big-screen adaptation features a star-studded cast with Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve in the lead roles and tells the story of a failed architect who discovers a series of mysterious, seemingly endless rooms in his furniture store – marking the beginning of the horror. "Backrooms" has grossed $330 million at the global box office so far, despite having a production budget of just $10 million. At just 21 years old, Parsons directed the most successful film of the studio A24. Not to mention that the film was also very well received by critics.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Backrooms and Obsession were just the beginning

With Curry Barker, another young director with YouTube roots is currently taking the film world by storm – also with a horror film that's thrilling critics and filling theaters. His film "Obsession" has already grossed 371 million – even though its budget is said to have been just 750,000 US dollars. The story centers on a young man who, with the help of a supernatural toy, has his greatest wish granted: the woman of his dreams falls in love with him – with dire consequences.

In the wake of this massive success, "The Mandela Catalogue" isn't the only internet horror sensation making its way to the big screen. Just recently, Warner Bros. Pictures secured the rights to "Siren Head." Behind the viral hit is Canadian illustrator Trevor Henderson, who created a massive, skeleton-like creature that caused a sensation online.

Social Media Integration

Here you will find external content from Instagram.
It remains to be seen whether "Siren Head" and "The Mandela Catalogue" will be as successful in theaters as "Backrooms" and "Obsession." In any case, these unusual stories offer an opportunity to enrich horror cinema with new, refreshing elements.

Joe movie: First details about the story have been revealed

Screenwriter Danny McBride hints at an upcoming start to filming

© Paramount

There's news about the planned "G.I. Joe" movie! Screenwriter Danny McBride spoke about the current status of the project on Josh Horowitz's "Happy Sad Confused" podcast. Most exciting of all: he also revealed the first details about the plot.

Initially, McBride – who, among other things, co-wrote the screenplay for the 2018 "Halloween" sequel – had envisioned a movie about the Dreadnoks. They're a notorious group of mercenaries from the "G.I. Joe" universe. When he pitched the idea to Paramount, the studio made it clear that they didn't want to revive the franchise with the Dreadnoks. So McBride came up with something else. Now, Duke, one of the franchise's central characters, is set to take center stage in the new film.

G.I. Joe: What Danny McBride's new movie is about

Together with other "G.I. Joe" members, he must face off against Cobra, the terrorist organization that repeatedly serves as the antagonist to the beloved heroes. The story is set in Springfield, a city that, despite its unassuming name, has a lot going for it – because it appears to have been secretly infiltrated by Cobra. According to McBride, we can expect a grounded take on the material. On the "Happy Sad Confused" podcast, he explained:

"It's not a comedy. It's like kind of suspense and action and I think it's going to be a lot of fun."

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Filming could begin soon

His enthusiasm might also stem from the fact that he was a huge fan as a child and loved "G.I. Joe" – even more than "Star Wars." McBride didn't just talk about the story, however; he also hinted at an imminent start to filming. The script is apparently already finished, so he hopes filming will start as early as next year.

McBride didn't mention who will star in the new "G.I. Joe" movie. In any case, the protagonist Duke is a character who has appeared in "G.I. Joe" film adaptations before. Channing Tatum played the role in 2009's "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" and 2013's "G.I. Joe: Retaliation." It remains to be seen who will take on the role this time around.

Here's how G.I. Joe has fared at the box office so far

The "G.I. Joe" franchise has been around for decades. In addition to the famous action figures, which first saw the light of day in the 1960s, fans have also enjoyed animated series and comic books. The franchise has also made it to the big screen several times. In 2009, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra," directed by Stephen Sommers, was released. The film was panned by critics but featured a star-studded cast, including Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Sienna Miller, Jonathan Pryce, Rachel Nichols, Christopher Eccleston, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, Lee Byung-hun, Marlon Wayans, Dennis Quaid, and the aforementioned Channing Tatum. The film grossed $302 million at the global box office.

Four years later, the sequel managed to top that figure: "G.I. Joe: Retaliation," directed by Jon M. Chu, grossed $375 million worldwide. The popular action stars Dwayne Johnson and Bruce Willis, who joined the cast this time around, certainly contributed to that success. However, this installment of the series didn't receive overly positive reviews either. Fans had to wait until 2021 for another film to be released: "Snake Eyes." There was another change in the director's chair: this time, Robert Schwentke was responsible for directing the film. Reviews were mixed, but at the box office, the film – starring Henry Golding – was a flop. With worldwide box office receipts of just 40 million, "Snake Eyes" fell far short of expectations. It will be interesting to see if Danny McBride's new take on the franchise will be more successful.

Moana's journey is far from over! Following the first animated hit from 2016, the sequel "Moana 2", and the live-action film, Disney is apparently already working on "Moana 3". During a press conference for the upcoming live-action film, Maui actor Dwayne Johnson revealed that discussions about the third animated film are underway.

The creative minds behind the franchise have also been confirmed: The screenplays for "Moana 3" will once again be written by Jared Bush and Dana Ledoux Miller. Both writers have close ties to the series. Jared Bush was responsible for the screenplay of the first film and collaborated with Dana Ledoux Miller on "Moana 2" as well as on the live-action adaptation. It's important to note, however, that nothing is set in stone yet. Disney is keeping its cards close to its chest for now.

© Disney

Why the Moana series has become Disney's biggest success in recent years

Since the release of "Moana" in 2016, the film series has become one of Disney's most successful and popular franchises. The first film captivated millions of viewers worldwide, the sequel "Moana 2" broke numerous box office records, and the live-action adaptation is already generating a lot of interest even before its release. But what's behind this extraordinary success? Several factors have contributed to the fact that the adventures of Moana and Maui captivate people all over the world.

© Disney

A heroine many can identify with

One of the main reasons for the series' success is the main character herself. Moana is very different from many classic Disney princesses. Her goal isn't to find true love, but to discover her own purpose. She is brave, independent, and ready to take responsibility for her people.

It is precisely this modern portrayal that resonates with many viewers. Children see her as a strong heroine, while adults admire her determination and courage. Moana shows that you should believe in yourself and follow your own path – a message that is timeless and appeals to people of all ages.

The Special Relationship Between Moana and Maui

Another key to the film's success is the dynamic between Moana and the demigod Maui. The two characters could hardly be more different. While Moana is determined and responsible, Maui is initially self-absorbed and thinks primarily of his own glory. It is precisely these contrasts that create many humorous, yet also emotional, moments. As the story unfolds, both characters learn from each other and develop a close friendship. This relationship feels authentic and sets the film apart from many other Disney stories, which often center on a romantic subplot.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

A Fascinating World Full of Adventure

The "Moana" films transport viewers to a stunning island world inspired by Polynesian culture and mythology. The tropical landscapes, mysterious legends, and breathtaking natural beauty create a unique atmosphere.

Disney worked closely with experts and consultants from the Pacific region during the films' development to portray the cultural influences as authentically as possible. As a result, the films feel particularly vibrant while also offering the opportunity to learn about a culture that has rarely been the focus of major animated films.

Music as the Key to Success

As with many Disney classics, music also plays a crucial role in "Moana." The songs are emotional, catchy, and perfectly complement the plot. Songs like "I'm Ready" and "You're Welcome" became huge hits worldwide and are still streamed millions of times today. The music ensures that many scenes linger in viewers' memories. It conveys emotions, strengthens the connection to the characters, and plays a major role in making the films worth watching again and again.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Success in Theaters and on Disney+

In addition to the positive response from critics and fans, the numbers speak for themselves. The first "Moana" film grossed more than $643 million worldwide and went on to become one of the most-watched films ever on Disney+. Its enormous popularity on streaming platforms fueled further growth in interest in the brand. When "Moana 2" hit theaters, the sequel benefited from this large fan base and even surpassed the $1 billion mark at the global box office.

Timeless messages inspire young and old alike

Another reason for the films' enduring success is the themes they explore. They focus on family, togetherness, courage, and the search for one's own identity. The stories show that you can overcome challenges and grow as a person. These messages resonate not only with children but also with adults who see themselves reflected in the characters and their struggles. As a result, the films serve as family entertainment for multiple generations.

The Future of the "Moana" Series

The "Moana" series has proven that modern characters, compelling stories, and cultural diversity can captivate audiences around the world. It is precisely this combination that makes the adventures of Moana and Maui one of the most successful Disney franchises of recent years – and ensures that the journey is far from over.

The remake of the cult horror film "Possession" continues to take shape: As reported by the industry magazine Deadline, actor Paul Dano will now star alongside Callum Turner and "The Substance" star Margaret Qualley in the remake of the supernatural thriller.

It is not yet known which role Dano will play. According to the website Nexus Point News, while the remake will retain the names of the main characters—Mark and Anna, played by Callum Turner and Margaret Qualley – it will relocate the setting to a different time and place. What other changes are planned remains a mystery for now. Parker Finn, who gained international recognition for the successful horror series "Smile", will direct the remake. Finn will not only direct but also write the screenplay. Robert Pattinson is serving as producer.

The original "Possession" by Andrzej Żuławski enjoys cult status among horror fans. The film tells the story of a married couple, played by Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill, whose relationship in Cold War-era West Berlin increasingly descends into a nightmarish and supernatural horror. "Possession" is now considered a milestone in arthouse horror and earned Adjani the award for Best Actress at the Cannes International Film Festival.

Movie Recommendations for Fans of Possession: These Films Capture the Same Nightmare

Andrzej Żuławski's unsettling masterpiece "Possession" blends psychological drama, relationship turmoil, and surreal horror into a unique cinematic experience. The story of a crumbling married couple caught in a vortex of madness and supernatural terror has achieved cult status to this day. Anyone looking for films that offer a similar atmosphere of despair, body horror, and emotional destruction should add these titles to their watchlist.

© Drop-Out Cinema eG

The Modern Counterpart: The Substance

With "The Substance", director Coralie Fargeat has created one of the most extraordinary horror films of recent years. The film combines graphic body horror with a dark story about identity and self-destruction. Much like "Possession", the film shows how inner conflicts and social pressure manifest themselves in physical nightmares. Its uncompromising direction and disturbing imagery make it a must-see for fans of the cult classic.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Horror and Relationship Crisis: Antichrist

Anyone who found the destructive dynamic between Mark and Anna in "Possession" fascinating should definitely check out "Antichrist". Lars von Trier's controversial film tells the story of a couple who move to a remote cabin after a tragedy and slowly descend into madness there. As with Żuławski, the focus isn't on the shock moments, but on the characters' psychological abysses. Both films use horror to explore grief, guilt, and the destruction of a relationship.

The Nightmare of Identity: Black Swan

At first glance, "Black Swan" doesn't seem like a classic horror film. Yet Darren Aronofsky's psychological thriller shares many similarities with "Possession". The story of a dancer who increasingly loses control of her mind unfolds in an intense, paranoid atmosphere. The film masterfully plays with the question of what is real and what exists only in the protagonist's mind – an element that also makes "Possession" such an eerie experience.

When Evil Comes from Within: Saint Maud

With "Saint Maud", director Rose Glass created a disturbing psychological drama about religious fanaticism and mental decline. The film focuses on its main character's inner turmoil and uses it to build a creeping horror that lingers long after the credits roll. Like "Possession", "Saint Maud" relies on intense performances, unsettling tension, and the feeling of watching a person slowly fall apart.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Surreal and Unpredictable: Mulholland Drive

Although David Lynch's "Mulholland Drive" is more of a mystery than a horror film, it conveys a similarly dreamlike and unsettling atmosphere as "Possession". The film defies any simple explanation and leaves the audience with more questions than answers. It is precisely this unpredictability that makes it so compelling. Anyone who appreciates the surreal elements and emotional intensity of "Possession" will also find much to enjoy in Lynch's masterpiece.

The modern take on relationship horror: *Men*

Alex Garland's "Men" combines psychological horror with symbolic imagery and a profound exploration of interpersonal conflicts. The story of a woman who travels to a remote village following a personal tragedy unfolds into a disturbing nightmare. In particular, the blend of emotional pain and surreal horror is strongly reminiscent of the themes in "Possession".

Why Possession Remains Unique to This Day

Many films draw on individual elements of "Possession" – the madness, the body horror, or the destructive power of a relationship. Yet few achieve the same intensity as Andrzej Żuławski's work. However, anyone looking for films that evoke similar feelings of unease, despair, and emotional escalation will find more than they're looking for in the titles mentioned. They prove that horror isn't just about monsters and jump scares, but also about the darkest aspects of human relationships and the fear of one's own inner self.

"Backrooms" proved to be a huge success at the box office – and now the next internet horror sensation is being adapted for the big screen. A film adaptation of "Siren Head" is currently in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Behind the viral horror hit is Canadian illustrator Trevor Henderson. The creature he created is a giant, emaciated, skeleton-like being. As the name "Siren Head" suggests, it has two sirens for a head. While this may sound downright bizarre, it took the internet by storm. It all began in 2018 with a post on Instagram and, over time, took on a remarkable life of its own. The strange creature became the subject of numerous fan theories, as fans let their creativity run wild and kept the "Siren Head" myth alive through, among other things, self-created video games and short films.

Zach Cregger and Brian Duffield are set to turn Siren Head into a movie

Behind the upcoming film adaptation of "Siren Head" are two up-and-coming filmmakers: Zach Cregger and Brian Duffield. The two are set to co-write the screenplay. Duffield is also slated to direct. Cregger, meanwhile, is on board as a producer alongside Roy Lee, Andrew Childs, and Scott Glassgold. Brian Duffield has previously made a name for himself as the writer and director of the alien invasion thriller "No One Will Save You." In addition, his upcoming film "Whalefall" is already generating a lot of buzz: In this survival thriller, a diver fights for his life after being swallowed by a massive whale. Zach Cregger, for his part, made a name for himself as the writer and director of the acclaimed horror hit "Weapons," which earned Amy Madigan the Oscar for Best Supporting Actress this year. Next, we'll see him bring a reimagining of the horror franchise "Resident Evil" to the big screen.

With the planned film adaptation of "Siren Head," Cregger and Duffield are preaching to the choir. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the major studios – Sony, Universal, Paramount, and Disney's 20th Century Studios – were interested, but another major player walked away with the deal: Warner Bros. Pictures. The major streaming services reportedly weren't in the running, as the deal focused primarily on a theatrical release of the material.

After Backrooms: Hollywood is on the lookout for unconventional horror material

Following the massive success of "Backrooms," studios are apparently on the lookout for similarly unusual horror material that has its roots on the internet and could become the next potential theatrical hit. In the case of "Backrooms," director Kane Parsons adapted his own YouTube web series for the big screen. The big-screen adaptation, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor and Renate Reinsve, tells the story of a failed architect who discovers a series of mysterious, seemingly endless rooms in his furniture store – and that's where the horror begins.

The film has grossed $330 million at the global box office so far – on a production budget of just $10 million. "Backrooms" currently ranks 10th on the 2026 charts of the world's most successful films and has broken several records. It is already the most successful A24 film of all time. In addition, 21-year-old Parsons is the youngest director whose film landed at number 1 on the box office charts upon its release. Alongside its financial success, "Backrooms" has also garnered critical acclaim, with reviewers highlighting its atmosphere, sound, and visual style, among other elements. Given this broad-based success, it's not too surprising that the major studios are interested in a project like "Siren Head." Especially since such films have the potential to be developed into a franchise. Parsons is reportedly already on the hunt for a screenwriter for "Backrooms 2." The director views the first film merely as the beginning of several narrative steps. And with "Siren Head" as well, if the first film is successful, it's likely to be just the beginning – after all, the many fan interpretations on the internet demonstrate just how much potential there is to expand the world of the eponymous creature.

Good news for "Mobland" fans: After significant conflicts arose between lead actor Tom Hardy and showrunner Jez Butterworth during the production of Season 2 – which reportedly even led Hardy to leave the production – things are now back on track. As Deadline exclusively reports, the actor is set to return for Season 3!

Several behind-the-scenes discussions apparently convinced Tom Hardy to remain part of the series. He received support from, among others, co-star Helen Mirren, who publicly spoke out in his defense.

The breakthrough finally came during a meeting in London between Tom Hardy, Jez Butterworth, and executive producer David Glasser. According to Deadline, the conversation went extremely well and led to an agreement to continue working together. Producer Guy Ritchie also apparently played an important role in the reconciliation.

Planning for the series' future is already in full swing. Even before the second season premiered, a writing team was assembled for a potential third season. Although an official renewal from Paramount is still pending, industry observers are confident that a third season is on the way. The crime drama has become a major hit and, after "Landman", recorded the second-most successful debut for an original series on the streaming service. "Mobland" tells the story of two powerful mafia families whose bitter war threatens to destroy not only their criminal empires but also countless lives.

Series recommendations for "Mobland" fans: Don't miss these gangster and crime dramas

With "Mobland", Paramount+ has scored a real hit. The series combines brutal power struggles, complex family dynamics, and a star-studded cast led by Tom Hardy, Helen Mirren, and Pierce Brosnan into a gripping crime drama. At its heart are rival mafia families whose conflicts destroy not only criminal empires but also personal relationships.

If you're looking for similar series now that the current episodes have ended, you'll be happy to know there are plenty of alternatives. These productions also feature dark gangster stories, ruthless crime bosses, and plenty of suspense.

Gangs of London: A Brutal Battle for Control of the Underworld

Hardly any other series evokes the atmosphere of "Mobland" quite like "Gangs of London". The plot begins with the murder of a powerful gangster boss, which triggers a bitter war between London's criminal organizations. Various gangs and families fight for dominance in the British capital.

Particularly impressive are the elaborately staged action sequences and the series' uncompromising intensity. At the same time, "Gangs of London" takes plenty of time to explore the characters and their motivations. Anyone who enjoys the mix of family drama and gang warfare in "Mobland" will be thoroughly entertained here.

Peaky Blinders: A Family's Rise to Power

"Peaky Blinders" has long been considered a modern classic of the gangster genre. The series tells the story of the Shelby family, who build a criminal empire in Birmingham after World War I. Similar to "Mobland," the focus is on power, loyalty, and betrayal. The family members are constantly forced to make difficult decisions that often have tragic consequences. Add to that strong characters, stylish direction, and numerous surprising twists. In 2026, a finale film titled "The Immortal Man" was also released.

For years, he was the boss on "NCIS": Special Agent Leroy Jethro Gibbs. After actor Mark Harmon left the show, the investigator appeared only a few more times in the hit crime series. But now he's returning. In the third season of the spin-off "Navy CIS: Origins," Harmon will once again take on the role of Gibbs. What makes this special is that it's not a one-time guest appearance – instead, he'll appear in every single episode of the new season.

The return of the popular "NCIS" star was announced in a clip on social media. Alongside the short video, which ends with a shot of Mark Harmon, the caption reads:

"The story he never told enters a new chapter... Mark Harmon will return to NCIS: Origins as Gibbs for all episodes of Season 3."

Here's why Mark Harmon's comeback as Leroy Jethro Gibbs is so special

The spin-off is a prequel to the original series "NCIS," in which Harmon once led the team of investigators who solved a new case week after week. At the center of "NCIS: Origins" is the young Leroy Jethro Gibbs, played by Austin Stowell, who is at the beginning of his career in the early 1990s and is struggling with personal trauma. Even before the recently announced comeback in the upcoming third season, Harmon had already appeared in the spin-off. First, in the series premiere, and second, as part of a later crossover with "NCIS." In addition, Harmon – as Gibbs – can be heard as the series' narrator.

© CBS

Gibbs' upcoming comeback, however, will be special not only because it means we'll get to see Mark Harmon regularly on screen again for an entire season. His return will also have a massive impact on the series itself – more specifically, on the series' structure. The "NCIS" franchise, which has spawned several spin-offs since its debut in 2003, is typically characterized by self-contained episodes. Once the case of the week is solved, the show moves on to the next one. The third season of "NCIS: Origins," on the other hand, is set to revolve around a case that will be explored in depth throughout the entire season. Specifically, it involves a mystery connected to the older Gibbs of the present – played by Harmon – that also ties into his time at Camp Pendleton in the '90s, as reported by The Hollywood Reporter.

It will be interesting to see how the two time periods are interwoven. However, we'll have to be patient for a little while longer. The third season of "NCIS: Origins" is set to air on CBS this fall.

Social Media Integration

Here you will find external content from Twitter.
Mark Harmon is also active behind the scenes on NCIS: Origins

In addition to Austin Stowell as the younger version of Gibbs, the series' cast includes Kyle Schmid as Special Agent Mike Franks, Mariel Molino as Special Agent Cecilia "Lala" Dominguez, Tyla Abercrumbie as Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Hayes, Diany Rodriguez as Special Agent Vera Strickland, and Caleb Foote as Special Agent Bernard "Randy" Randolf. "NCIS: Origins" was created by Gina Lucita Monreal and David J. North, who also serve as executive producers – alongside Mark Harmon, among others, who is also involved behind the scenes as an executive producer on the spin-off.

In the original "NCIS" series, Harmon played Gibbs through Season 19. The void he left behind was, in a sense, filled by Gary Cole, who has been on board since Season 19 as Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker.

From Castlevania to Devil May Cry: An Overview of All Major Video Game Adaptations on Netflix

Video game adaptations have long been considered difficult territory. Numerous films and series failed to win over either fans or critics. In recent years, however, the tide has turned – and Netflix, in particular, has played a decisive role in this development. For years, the streaming service has increasingly focused on well-known gaming brands and has since built up an impressive portfolio of series and movies. With the announced "Persona" live-action series, this universe is now expanding once again.

© Netflix

Castlevania: The Beginning of a Wave of Success

"Castlevania" laid the foundation for the success of video game adaptations on Netflix. The animated series, which aired from 2017 to 2021, is based on the Konami game series of the same name and tells the story of vampire hunter Trevor Belmont in his battle against Dracula. The dark atmosphere, mature storytelling, and high-quality animation quickly made "Castlevania" a favorite among critics and fans alike.

The series proved that video game adaptations can be more than just fan service and paved the way for numerous other projects. The success of "Castlevania" ultimately led to the spin-off "Castlevania: Nocturne". The series focuses on Richter Belmont and is set during the French Revolution. This project was also well-received and demonstrated that the franchise on Netflix is far from exhausted.

Arcane: The Masterpiece of League of Legends

When "Arcane" premiered in 2021, the series surprised not only "League of Legends" fans but the entire TV landscape. Produced by Riot Games and Netflix, it tells the backstory of the sisters Vi and Jinx and is set in the cities of Piltover and Zhaun. The elaborate animation, emotional storyline, and complex characters made "Arcane" a global phenomenon. The series won several awards, including an Emmy, and is still considered one of the best video game adaptations ever.

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

Another major success followed in 2022 with "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners". The anime series is set in the "Cyberpunk 2077" universe and tells the story of young David Martinez, who fights for survival in the brutal metropolis of Night City. Studio Trigger delivered a visually stunning series that not only received outstanding reviews but also helped reignite interest in the video game itself.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Pokémon Concierge

Although "Pokémon Concierge" is aimed at a younger audience, the stop-motion series still showcases a completely new side of the Pokémon universe. Instead of epic battles, the focus is on relaxation and the relationship between humans and Pokémon.

"Persona" Coming Soon

With the announced live-action series based on "Persona", Netflix is further expanding its gaming portfolio. It's still unclear which game the series will be based on, but the popular JRPG series should fit perfectly into the streaming service's strategy.

In recent years, Netflix has impressively demonstrated that video game adaptations can be much more than just a niche product. With hits like "Arcane", "Cyberpunk: Edgerunners", and "Castlevania", the streaming service has significantly raised the bar for the genre. Given the growing number of projects, one thing seems certain: the connection between video games and streaming series will only grow stronger in the coming years.

The "Reacher" universe is expanding with the spin-off "Neagley" – and now the first images are here, which we'll show you throughout this article. But that's not all: The release date for the new series starring Maria Sten has also been set. "Neagley" premieres on September 16, 2026, on Prime Video. All episodes of the first season are set to be released simultaneously on that day, as reported by Deadline.

The premise of "Neagley" has also been announced. The series centers on Frances Neagley, who previously appeared in "Reacher" and will continue to be portrayed by Maria Sten. The official description from Amazon Prime Video reads:

"Frances Neagley (Maria Sten) is a private investigator in Chicago and former military protege of Jack Reacher (Alan Ritchson) in the Army's 110th Special Investigations Unit. When she learns that a beloved friend from her past has been killed in a suspicious accident, she becomes hell-bent on justice. Using everything she's learned from Jack Reacher and her time as a member of the 110 Special Investigators, Neagley puts herself on a dangerous path to uncover a menacing evil."

© Prime Video

Reacher actor Alan Ritchson joins the cast as a guest star

While Maria Sten plays the lead role, Reacher actor Alan Ritchson appears as a guest star. Alongside Sten, the regular cast includes Greyston Holt as Detective Hudson Riley, Jasper Jones as Keno, Adeline Rudolph as Renee, Matthew Del Negro as Pierce Woodrow, and Damon Herriman as Lawrence Cole. "Neagley" was created by Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton, who also serve as screenwriters and executive producers. Santora previously developed the original series, for which he serves as showrunner. Lee Child, author of the "Jack Reacher" novels that served as the literary basis for the series' universe, is also among the executive producers.

In addition to the details and first-look photos for "Neagley," there's also an update on "Reacher" that fans of the action hero have been eagerly awaiting. The release date for the new episodes of the original series starring Alan Ritchson has now been set. The fourth season of "Reacher" premieres on August 12, 2026, on Prime Video. The first three episodes are set to be released on the first day. After that, new episodes will air weekly. The Season 4 finale will be released on September 16 – the same day the spin-off "Neagley" premieres. So "Reacher" fans should definitely mark this date in bold on their calendars.

© Prime Video

What season 4 of Reacher is about

In any case, the future of the "Reacher" franchise looks bright. It was announced some time ago that the series will continue beyond the fourth season. And the series clearly enjoys a great deal of confidence from the executives at Amazon Prime Video: "Reacher" was renewed for a fifth season before the fourth had even premiered. No further details about the fifth season have been revealed. But there's already some information about the plot of Season 4: It all apparently begins with a chance encounter on the subway. Jack Reacher gets caught up in a deadly game – and finds himself facing ruthless adversaries from the highest echelons of power.

So we'll be seeing Alan Ritchson as Reacher for a while longer. However, he isn't the first actor to take on the role of the hero. Tom Cruise previously portrayed Jack Reacher on the big screen. In 2012, he took on the lead role in the film adaptation by director and screenwriter Christopher McQuarrie, with whom he would later go on to make several "Mission: Impossible" films. Four years after the first installment, Cruise reprised the role in the sequel, "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back." This time, the film was directed by Edward Zwick – and wasn't quite as successful at the box office as its predecessor. While the first film grossed $218 million worldwide, "No Way Back" brought in only $162 million.

Our META Review of Minions & Monsters

We tell you whether the animated film delivers – and break down what other critics have to say

© Universal Pictures

Everyone knows them: Whether as the loyal sidekicks of the supervillain Gru in "Despicable Me" or as the chaotic protagonists of their own movies – the Minions have long since become icons of animated cinema. With "Minions & Monsters," they're now returning to the big screen – and embarking on their most unusual adventure yet. But can these yellow fan favorites still captivate audiences after all these years? Here's what we and other critics think in KinoCheck's META Movie Review!

Here's what it's about

The world of the Minions is expanding: In the third film in the series, we once again travel back in time. "Minions & Monsters" is set in 1920s Hollywood. This time, however, we're not following the familiar characters Kevin, Stuart, and Bob. Instead, the film centers on an entirely new group of Minions. So "Minions & Monsters" isn't a sequel or "Minions 3" – it's actually a spin-off or prequel.

But of course, the new Minions are also on the hunt for the next villain they can serve. Through a series of unlikely events, they find themselves on the set of a movie directed by Max (Christoph Waltz), where they throw the entire production into chaos. The studio executives quickly recognize the Minions' star potential, and before long, the little yellow creatures take Hollywood by storm and become celebrated movie stars.

Our protagonists, James, Henry, and Ed, have one dream above all else: they want to make their own monster movie! And what do you need for that? Of course: real monsters! They set out to find them, summon terrifying creatures, and, unsurprisingly, unleash plenty of chaos along the way.

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

What do you need to know before going to the movies?

One thing becomes clear very quickly: You don't need to have seen any of the previous "Minions" movies. Not only does the film feature an entirely new cast of characters, but it also reintroduces the basic premise of the Minions right from the beginning. The yellow fan favorites have been searching for the "Big Boss" since the dawn of time. They always seek out the most despicable villain to follow – this time in 1920s Hollywood.

A Fresh Approach

Many critics highlight the approach of "Minions & Monsters" as a major plus. The new "Minions" movie stands out with a refreshing setting that offers plenty of potential for gags. The way the Minions evolve into movie stars during Hollywood's silent film era is thoroughly entertaining and original. Film critic Max Borg from the Next Best Picture website calls "Minions & Monsters" the "most refreshing entry in the franchise." Variety critic Guy Lodge shares this opinion:

"[The movie] is a clear peak for the series: a Minions movie with an actual idea at its core beyond general cheerful chaos, and proof that the pill-shaped devils are served better as stars than as sidekicks."

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

The Minions in Hollywood

Thanks to its premise, "Minions & Monsters" is packed with movie references. Right from the start, the film presents the early days of cinema – reimagined by the Minions, resulting in plenty of laughs. Many critics highlight this approach, including Drew Taylor from TheWrap:

"It's a charming, brightly animated love letter to Hollywood's heyday and a celebration of the moviegoing experience."

In particular, the silent film classics of Buster Keaton and Charlie Chaplin are referenced. In this way, director Pierre Coffin pays homage to these Hollywood legends. Director Pierre Coffin has said that the Minions' comedy has always been heavily inspired by the great silent film stars. After all, just like with Keaton or Chaplin, the yellow heroes' slapstick works even without dialogue.

The many references are, of course, particularly entertaining for movie fans. Anyone who enjoys Easter eggs and classic cinema will have plenty to discover throughout "Minions & Monsters".

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

Minions Humor: Same Old, Same Old?

While the setting is new, the film's tone remains the same. Slapstick, silliness, and nonstop chaos once again take center stage. Many critics agree on this, including John Nugent from the entertainment magazine Empire:

"The overall tone remains as juvenile as ever. It is goofy and giggly and resolutely wedded to stupidity."

So when it comes to Minions humor, it's business as usual. It all comes down to whether this kind of humor appeals to you. Because aside from the comedic interludes and numerous movie references, the film doesn't have much else to offer, as Nugent and other critics point out.

"There's little attempt to add much depth to the story, in the way that Pixar might try to – it is essentially, once again, just a series of contrived opportunities for the little guys to get up to chaotic mischief."

<picture></picture>
<use xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink" xlink:href="/images/sprites.svg#kc-play"></use>

Please enable JavaScript for the domains
kinocheck.com resp. *.kinocheck.com
to watch our videos.

The trailers already convey the film's tone pretty well – if they don't appeal to you, you'll probably have a hard time with "Minions & Monsters" as well.

Our take: The humor mostly works well when it comes to the movie references, especially when the Minions recreate iconic scenes from film history. Outside of those moments, however, the nonstop slapstick starts to wear thin over the course of the runtime. It's just too often more of the same. Especially in the second half, it gets a bit much, and toward the end, it's less original than it was at the beginning.

Conclusion

Overall, the critical reception for Minions & Monsters has been solid to positive. Our verdict: Thanks to its original setting, the film has some standout moments. At the same time, the familiar Minions humor can become repetitive over the course of the movie.

But it's best to see for yourself: "Minions & Monsters" opens in theaters on July 1.
