Shazam! Fury of the Gods Ratings & Reviews
- Manuel FrangisMarch 26, 2025I just watched Shazam! Fury of the Gods and I give it 3 out of 5 stars. This sequel has some fun moments, cool visuals, and a few laughs, but overall it just felt like a step down from the first movie. It tries to go bigger in every way—more action, more villains, more mythology—but in doing that, it kind of loses the charm that made the first one work. Zachary Levi is back as Shazam and he is still fun to watch. He plays the adult superhero version of Billy Batson, and he brings the same energy as before. He is goofy, unsure of himself, and trying to keep his superhero family together while dealing with the pressure of growing up. But this time around, it feels like he is playing the part a little more like a cartoon character, and some of the emotional stuff does not land as well. The rest of the Shazam family gets more screen time, which is both a good and bad thing. It is great seeing them work together and figure things out as a team, but it also makes the movie feel a little crowded. There are so many characters now, and not all of them get enough time to really stand out. The younger versions of the characters barely get any screen time at all, and I missed that balance between the kid and hero forms from the first movie. The villains this time are the Daughters of Atlas, played by Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, and Rachel Zegler. They are powerful, mysterious, and connected to the gods, which adds a fantasy vibe to the movie. Helen Mirren brings some weight to the role, but the villains never felt all that interesting to me. Their motivations are kind of vague, and their scenes sometimes take away from the main story instead of making it better. The action is bigger, but not always better. There are a lot of CGI-heavy fights and magical effects, but none of it really stands out. It is fun to watch in the moment, but it is also kind of forgettable. The dragon looks cool, and there are a few exciting moments, but nothing that blew me away. What I did still enjoy was the heart of the movie. Even though it gets lost sometimes, the theme of family and sticking together is still there. Freddy has a bigger role in this one, and his story is probably the strongest part of the whole movie. Jack Dylan Grazer gives a great performance, and he brings a lot of heart and humor to his scenes. The pacing is a little off, and the movie feels longer than it needs to be. Some jokes drag on, and some of the emotional beats feel rushed. There is also a ton of setup for future DC stuff, which feels a little forced, especially with where things stand in the bigger DC universe right now. I give Shazam! Fury of the Gods 3 out of 5 stars because it is entertaining but uneven. It has some solid moments, a few laughs, and good performances, but it just does not hit as hard as the first one did. Overall Shazam! Fury of the Gods is a decent sequel that tries to do too much and loses some of the fun along the way. I did not hate it, but I probably will not be rewatching it anytime soon.
- VarunOctober 19, 2024Very dull plot and action but I surprisingly liked the silly humour and didn’t get bored at any point thanks to the charming cast. Freddy was the most entertaining, everyone else got barely any character development. Overall a forgettable film released at the end of a dying DCEU.
