The Games

The "God of War" game series currently comprises 9 games and was first released for the PlayStation 2 in 2005. The games' scenario takes us back to ancient times and presents us with a world full of gods, titans and other mythical creatures. In this world, the player takes on the role of the demigod Kratos, who killed his own family after being outsmarted by Ares, the god of war.

Over the course of the games, Kratos not only becomes embroiled in the schemes of the gods, but also fights all the way from the underworld to Olympus. With the 2018 relaunch of the series, the storyline was then shifted from Greek mythology to Norse mythology. The relationship between Kratos and his son Atreus plays a crucial role as well.

The Series

The story of Kratos therefore has a lot to offer and provides more than enough ideas for an exciting adaptation in a series form. And this is exactly what Amazon has officially commissioned in 2022: Rafe Judkins, who previously worked on the fantasy series "The Wheel of Time", is set to be the showrunner. Fans have been wondering at what point in Kratos' life the series will start. In an interview with Deadline, Sony Pictures TV President Katherine Pope addressed the speculation and revealed that the series' story will begin with 2018's "God of War". So we'll be presented with a much more matured Kratos. Pope herself is a big fan of the game and promised to stay true to the original.

Who Plays Kratos?

But the most exciting question is probably about which actor will actually play Kratos. Last year, the first rumors made the rounds that superstar Dwayne Johnson could possibly slip into the role. However, this was denied by Cory Barlog, creative director at Santa Monica Studio. Since then, things have gone quiet about a possible cast, but that hasn't stopped fans from speculating further: Dave Bautista, Gerard Butler, Tom Hardy as well as Jason Momoa, for example, are among the most desirable candidates.

When Will the Series be Released?

Unfortunately, little has really happened in terms of production so far: there's no info on the cast, and no info on a potential release date. Similarly ambitious Amazon series such as "The Rings of Power" and "The Wheel of Time" also took a few years before they were finally released. A release of "God of War" prior to 2025 thus seems fairly unlikely, and even next year would be quite optimistic.
